One of the hardest things for me as a parent was watching my kids cling to "friends" who weren't really friends. It took more than a few times for them to be excluded, rejected, ignored, and conveniently forgotten to finally realize they deserved to be treated so much better.
It's a process, though...
Our kids so desperately want to fit in so they'll keep giving these so-called friends second and third and fourth chances. But what they don't realize is that they're wasting precious time on people who are not meant to be in their life.
Let's keep reminding our kids that they deserve to have friends who care, who include them, who invite them, who show up for them, cheer for them, and sit with them when life isn't easy. Friends who aren't jealous or back-stabbing or gossiping behind their backs.
I know it's so hard when you're 13 or 14 or even 17 - you don't want to be alone, you don't want to walk away even though the friendship is toxic... you'd rather have crummy friends than no friends at all.
But our kids deserve SO much better and one day, with a whole lot of love, encouragement, guidance, and gentle reminders, they'll eventually come to realize that not everyone deserves a seat at their table and that their friendship should only be given to those who truly value it. ❤❤❤
