GOLFWEEK AMATEUR TOUR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Three Days of Drama, Comebacks, and Wire-to-Wire Battles Settle 54-Hole National Titles
CHAMP FLIGHT:
In the premier Championship Flight, Joe Jaspers (Charlotte, NC) delivered a masterclass in consistency and composure to capture the national title. Opening with a steady 73 and 74, Jaspers turned on the jets during Sunday’s final round, firing an even-par 72—the lowest score of the final day—to finish at 3-over 219.
First-round co-leader Corbin Holt (Alabama) set the early pace with a blistering 2-under 70 on Day 1 and backed it up with a 73 on Day 2. With a final round score of 79, he secured solo second at 222 (+6). Jeff Wong (Hilton Head-Savannah) closed out the podium in third at 223 (+7) after three solid rounds (72-74-77). First-round co-leaders Chris Bailey (Dallas-Fort Worth, TX; 225) and Mike Little (Tidewater, VA; 227) rounded out the top five.
A FLIGHT:
Columbus Tour Player, Rich Campbell proved that patience pays off in A Flight. Entering the final round in a tight pack, Campbell slammed the door on the competition by carding a clinical 76—the field's best score of the day—to cruise to a five-stroke victory at 16-over 232 (77-79-76).
Nashville’s Seth Gregg held on for solo second place at 237 (+21) with bookend rounds of 77 sandwiching a second-round 83. The battle for third was a three-way shootout, with Doug Cristina (Mississippi), Dean Campbell (Indianapolis, IN), and Anthony Fogle (Cincinnati/Dayton) all deadlocking at 242 (+26). Fogle, who put together the flight’s low round of the tournament with a second-round 75, saw his title hopes fade following an 89 on Sunday.
B FLIGHT:
B Flight produced the tournament’s most thrilling leaderboard collision, as Brian Miller (Louisiana North) and Derwin Pitre (South Florida) matched each other stroke-for-stroke to finish tied atop the leaderboard at 23-over 239.
Pitre jumped out early with a stellar opening-round 78 and maintained a steady hand (83-78), but Miller came charging on Sunday. Firing a tournament-best final-round 77, Miller erased the deficit to force a share of the championship total. Michael Cherry (Central North Carolina) took solo third at 246 (+30), followed closely by Tampa's K.C. Coulthart at 247 (+31). A crowded four-way tie for fifth at 250 (+34) featured Steven Zannos, Tyler Wilson, Michael Anderson, and Ben Coleman.
C FLIGHT:
Never count out a grinder. After a rocky opening 90, Kevin Brown (Columbus, OH) orchestrated the comeback of the weekend. Shaving strokes each day, Brown fired rounds of 84 and a gritty closing 83 to capture the C Flight title at 257 (+41) by the narrowest of margins.
Brown’s comeback edged out Zak Thompson (Washington, DC Metro), who led early with a dazzling Day 1 round of 81. A turbulent second-round 95 proved costly for Thompson, though he fought back valiantly with an 82 on Sunday to finish just one heartbreaking shot back at 258 (+42). Milwaukee’s Aaron Davis claimed solo third at 260 (+44), while Paxton Divine and Jonathan Little shared fourth at 261. Notably, North Florida’s Jae Lee posted the low round of the entire flight with a Sunday 80, vaulting into a tie for 7th.
D FLIGHT:
The most dramatic turnaround of the championship belonged to Mark Harrison (Arizona) in D Flight. Sitting well off the pace after an opening-round 100, Harrison caught fire over the weekend. Following a 95 on Day 2, Harrison blistered the course with a remarkable closing round of 87—by far the best single-round score in the division—to sn**ch victory from the jaws of defeat at 282 (+66).
The heroics left Wisconsin's Mike Miller (Milwaukee, WI) in a heartbreaking second place at 283 (+67). Miller was a model of consistency all weekend (96-93-94) and seemed poised for victory before Harrison’s late charge. Robert Aamodt (Denver, CO) and Josh Gray (North Florida) tied for third at 285 (+69), followed by Tampa's Po Lehman in fifth at 286 (+70).
