Where has common sense gone with horse adverts?!

1. No one will be interested in buying your ‘established dressage/showjumper/eventer’ from a single headshot. Everyone will automatically assume it is a total non hoper and that it’s only selling point is it has both ears still attached and isn’t a total uggo.

2. No one will buy ‘world class potential’ with a picture of it falling over a cross pole. I'm all for positive thinking, but at that point the only world-class thing on display is your optimism. Your advert says you're either deluded or legally blind.

3. ‘Has some quirks’ - well you might as well list them as we’ve all read between the lines and just assume it’s a total psychopath that stands up on its hind legs, is rodeo trained and feeds on the souls of the innocent. Just list the quirks. Nine times out of ten they're far less terrifying than our imagination. And if they're not... well lawyers exist so you should probably list them anyway.

4. Personal gripe: give me a rough idea of the price. Horses seem to range anywhere from £5k to "you'll need to sell a kidney and possibly a small country." I don't want to waste your time asking if it's hopelessly out of budget. "Low five figures" will do. Or—and hear me out—you could just list the bloody price.

5. If you are selling a competition horse, put the competition name in the ad. If you don’t, I’m going to assume its record is similar in scoring to cricket or it has decked its last 3 riders and jumped out the ring while trying to boot the judge.

6. “Videos on request." Why? Is it classified footage? Are you in witness protection? If I'm about to spend the price of a new car on a horse, I'd quite like to see it isn’t actually a camel impersonating a horse before I start an awkward Facebook Messenger conversation.

Honestly, a decent advert would save everyone hours. You'd sell the horse faster, buyers wouldn't have to interrogate you (though I personally think you’d have better luck getting information out of a mafia leader than some people selling horses), and we'd all be marginally less pi**ed off about the whole ordeal. But maybe it’s just me…

Reasons why everyone needs a riding instructor who knows you well enough to absolutely murder your ego...

7.30am lesson before work.
Pre second coffee (I’m not mad enough to attempt without one at least), bleary eyed, and to fully set the scene I’d taken 3 attempts at putting Demon Mares bridle on successfully.

We started with trot-halt-trot transitions.
After about three of them I get feedback.
"They're bad."
A pause.
"Very, very bad."
Good morning to you too.

Now, another instructor might have gone with something like, "Let's work on getting those a bit sharper." Not mine.
Mine looked at what I'd produced and decided brutal honesty was the best policy.
And do you know what? That's exactly why you need an instructor who knows you.
Someone who's known you long enough to know you won't burst into tears and give up entirely because your transitions have been described as "very, very bad" before 8am.
Someone who knows you'll laugh, attempt to fix them, and probably admit they were right.

Because, well unfortunately, they were.
By the end of the lesson they were actually bordering on average.
But I do love the fact that there was absolutely no attempt to protect my feelings first.
Just a swift slap down of the ego, followed by 30 minutes of constructive rehabilitation.

It's efficient, really.
Nothing says "trusted instructor" quite like someone who can destroy your self-esteem before breakfast... and have you thanking them for it on the way home. 😂🐴
