In whatever we do, our first priority is ensuring our residents, their families, and our communities are safe. Today, along with Councilwoman Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez, community advocates, leaders from Everytown for Gun Safety, and Tom Ma**er, whose son Daniel was murdered in the shooting at Columbine High School, we called the demand by the DOJ to repeal the assault weapons ban a sweeping overreach of the federal government. Denver’s law has stood for 37 years because it works, it saves lives, and it reflects the values of our community. No demand or lawsuit from Washington is going to change that. We will not compromise on our values, our integrity or our commitment to safety, regardless of the federal government weaponizing the judicial system against those they disagree with. Colorado and our nation have suffered too long and too greatly from gun violence. Too many children, teachers, friends, parents and loved ones have been lost to senseless violence. We will not yield. We will continue to stand for commonsense legislation that both protects our residents from further harm, and upholds every person’s constitutional rights.
