Sleep for Swimmers: The Science of Recovery, Motor Learning, and High Performance 09/09/2026

Most swimmers think their training ends the second they touch the wall and get out of the pool.

But if you are trying to fix your start, hold your water on your catch, or survive a brutal training block, the most important part of your practice actually happens in your bed. 🛌

After diving deep into Matthew Walker's Why We Sleep, I wrote a comprehensive breakdown on exactly what happens to a swimmer's brain and body at night. We cover:

🧠 Why you literally cannot "learn" a new technique without sleep (and how the brain hardwires stroke changes).
🦵 Why heavy yardage without deep sleep leads straight to shoulder injuries.
⏰ How to actually manage the reality of 5:00 AM practices without ruining your performance.

Whether you're an athlete trying to drop time, a parent driving the early morning carpool, or a coach designing a season plan—this changes how you look at the "grind."

Most swimmers never realize how much of their training continues after they leave the pool. 👇

Sleep isn’t simply “rest.” It’s involved in memory consolidation, motor learning, cognitive function, and physical recovery—all of which matter for swimming performance.

This is especially important in a technical sport like swimming. Starts, turns, stroke mechanics, pacing, and race skills all require the brain to learn and adapt. Consistently getting enough quality sleep can help support that process.

How much sleep are you getting during a typical training week?

BEHIND THE BLOCKS: University of Kentucky Swimming | Swim Coach Joao Visits #20 09/08/2026

I’ve been fortunate to visit a lot of world-class swimming programs over the years, but every time I walk onto a Division I pool deck, I’m reminded that no two elite teams operate the same way.

For episode #20 of Behind the Blocks, I headed down to Lexington to spend some time on deck with Head Coach Bret Lundgaard and the University of Kentucky Swimming & Diving team.

Whether you’re a high school swimmer figuring out what college recruiting really looks like, a coach looking for setup ideas, or just a fan of fast swimming, this visit offered an awesome look at how a top-tier SEC program structures its training, manages intensity, and builds a culture designed to disrupt NCAA swimming.

BEHIND THE BLOCKS: Raleigh Swimming Association (RSA) | Swim Coach Joao Visits #11 09/01/2026

Behind the Blocks: Inside Raleigh Swimming Association's High-Output Speed Session

I've been fortunate to visit a lot of incredible swimming programs across the country, but my trip out to North Carolina to visit the Raleigh Swimming Association (RSA) for Episode #11 of Behind the Blocks was one I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.

The Research Triangle region in North Carolina is arguably one of the most competitive swimming hubs in the United States right now. The sheer concentration of talent, top-tier coaching, and club depth in this area makes every deck visit unique. I wanted to see firsthand how my friend and RSA’s Head Coach Ethan Cooke structures high-level speed training and builds culture in his first 12 months taking the reins of the program.

Check out the full vlog below to step right onto the deck with us at RSA headquarters:
