Ever caught one of these?

These are gray triggerfish, and they're a pretty interesting fish to encounter off the Carolina coast.

Triggerfish get their name from the unusual dorsal spine on top of their head. That first spine can lock upright, making it difficult for predators to swallow them.

They also have some serious teeth for their size. They use those teeth to crush hard-shelled prey like crabs, shrimp and other small marine animals.

And if you've ever handled one, you already know they're built differently. That thick, tough skin and those sharp fins aren't exactly designed for cuddling. 😂

Spanish mackerel have been providing some great action when the conditions cooperate, and there's nothing better than seeing a group come back to the dock with a pile of fish like this.

🎣 Carolina Beach Fishing Report

It's been a little mixed on the water this week, but there are still some excellent fishing opportunities around Carolina Beach.

🔥 Spanish Mackerel: Excellent

The nearshore Spanish bite has been one of the highlights lately, with plenty of action closer to the beach.

🎣 Reef Fishing: Slower, but quality fish are still being caught.

We've been seeing flounder, nice grey trout, and even some overslot red drum mixed in.

🌊 Offshore Trolling: Slower right now, but we're expecting this fishery to improve over the coming month as conditions change.

🐟 Offshore Bottom: Excellent.

Grunts, black sea bass, grouper and snapper are keeping the bottom fishing action strong.

Overall, there's still plenty of reason to get out on the water. Some fisheries are hot, others are starting to transition, and that's what makes this time of year interesting.

We'll keep you posted on what's biting.

The smiles, the excitement, and that moment when they get to hold up their catch and say, "I caught this!"

It's been a heck of a week on the Cheerio Lady. 🎣

We've had a little bit of everything lately:

🎣 Excellent offshore bottom fishing
🐟 Grouper, snapper, grunts and more
🌊 Good nearshore action
🦈 Sharks
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family trips
☀️ And plenty of time on the water

Most of our recent trips have been full-day bottom trips, but we've had some great half-day trips mixed in too.

The fish are biting. The weather will ultimately decide how much time we get on the water, but when conditions line up, we're ready to go.

This is why we love fishing with families. 🦈

A shark on the line will definitely get everyone's attention!

These young anglers got to experience some close-to-shore action and came home with a story they're not going to forget anytime soon.

Fishing isn't always about putting dinner in the cooler. Sometimes it's about catching something you've never caught before, getting a little adrenaline rush, and giving the kids a memory they'll be talking about for years.

When the bottom fishing is this good, it's hard to stay away. 🎣

Another quality grouper coming over the rail during one of our recent offshore trips.

We've been primarily running full-day bottom trips lately, and the fishing has been excellent. There's been a great mix of grouper, snapper, grunts and other bottom species.

If you're looking for a full day on the water and want to put some quality fish in the box, now is a pretty good time to go fishing.
