It’s been a while since I’ve been here, so take a minute and give it a read.
A decade ago we sold A LOT of really cool custom built hardtails and rigid mtn bikes. Many we don’t see come through the shop anymore.
Recently a friend dropped me note saying that he got back on his 10 year old MootoX YBB for the first time in years as he has some other amazing (and more current) rides. His message mentioned how fun and fast it was and that he had missed that feeling.
At the same time, I recently sold my Revel Ranger to a well deserving junior. I wasn’t getting enough mtb time in this summer, he needed a bad ass race bike and I had already gotten plenty of riding on it to speak intelligently about my experiences with it. While I wait on a new ride, I was mtn bike-less. Kinda. I had my 2010 MootoX in pieces that I hadn’t looked at in years. It had been hung up in favor of full suspension, slacker geometry, carbon fiber super bikes.
I was looking for something to re-stoke the fire. My days of riding this bike on some epic all day excursions, pre work hot laps with and endurance races around the Western US were some of my happiest memories on the bike.
So, I rebuilt it the other day. A lot of old parts, a few newer ones off the Revel, and a one off wheelset that made it uniquely mine. Beautifully welded by Matty P, it’s now rigid again, singlespeed, with an almost 72 degree head angle, quick release wheels and no dropper. But golly I smiled a lot!
The moral of the story: Remember those expertly crafted bikes that haven’t seen the sunshine lately. With a tiny bit of maintenance, you’ll remember why you loved them. They still have their place. -AR
