Download our FREE Car Ride Home Parent Guide including five things to say. Three to never say. And the one question that works every time.

The car ride home is where most parents lose their kid. Not on the field — in the car.

They already know they struggled. They’ve been replaying it since the third inning. What they need on that ride isn’t more information. It’s one place where the game is over.

So I put it on one page. What to say, what to skip, and the three questions for when they’re ready to talk about it.

The ride home shapes more of your kid's confidence than the game did. One page — five things to say, three rules, and the one sentence that changes everything.

PARENTS OF ATHLETES: The car ride home after a bad game is a confusing place for any parent especially when you want to say the right things.

Two days before my freshman year of high school, my dad died of a heart attack. Nine months later, my mom lost her battle with cancer. I kept pitching, but the mound stopped being the place I felt free. It became the place I began to fear failure.

I still reached the Division 1 level. Talent will carry you further than people think.

Then I tore my ACL, my arm went, and that was it.

Here’s what took me years to admit — I’d already checked out. I used to pitch with swagger. That became a shell of a person just trying to get an out. Because the game stopped being fun. I was carrying expectations, mine and everyone else’s, and comparing myself to every other arm in the program.

So I blamed my coach. I blamed my circumstances. I blamed everything except the one thing I controlled.

I never trained my mental game. Not one rep. Thousands of pitches in the bullpen, zero minutes on the thing that was actually costing me.

Nobody told me mindset was a skill. That you can learn to stop comparing. I found that out after my playing days were over.

Talent may get you a spot on the team. Mindset is what keeps you there.

That’s why D1 Mindset Coach exists. For the athlete carrying more than they let on. For the coach trying to reach them. For the parent watching from the fence with no idea what to say.

Two sessions with the Central Bucks South coaching staff. Culture and leadership.

Then this landed in our inbox.
Justin Farrell has built something real at Central Bucks South. (R.O.W.) Respect. Ownership. Work Ethic. That’s not a poster on a wall down there — the coaches aspire to live it.

Our job was simple. Give the staff space to think deeply about the culture they’re building, and hand them tools they can use Monday morning.

The engagement in that room was the whole thing. Coaches sharing ideas. Coaches challenging each other. Coaches laughing. That’s when the learning sticks.

Thank you Justin, and thank you to every coach who showed up ready to work.

ADs and head coaches — if you’re thinking about your staff’s culture for the fall, send us a DM. We’ll walk you through how we work with coaches and teams.

Your body language is a billboard.

You strike out. Head drops. Shoulders roll. Bat drags all the way back to the dugout.

You just told the pitcher they own you. You told the other dugout to keep attacking. And you took energy out of your teammate on deck.

Here’s the formula: Event + Response = Outcome.

The event isn’t yours. The punch-out, the error, the call that didn’t go your way — none of that is in your control.

The response is 100% yours. Every single pitch.

And the part most athletes miss: you can practice the response. Elite athletes don’t just visualize the home run. They mentally rehearse getting rung up — and they see themselves walk back chest up, chin level, eyes forward. So when it happens live, it’s not a surprise. It’s a rep they’ve already taken.

You can’t always control the event. But you can always control what they see.

🤝 Proud to team up with Training4Athletes.com on this one. They connect athletes and parents with great coaches in their area — because the physical reps and the mental reps both deserve real coaching. Go give them a follow.

Shout out to South Hunterdon Regional High School field hockey team who came together to design their vision as one team.

Not a whiteboard nobody looks at after week one. Something they see every day.

Look close — it’s not all trophies. Mental health. Support. Patience. Rest. They decided together what success looks like.

Coaches can set the tone. But when players build it, they defend it.

Coaches, parents — what would go on your team’s board?

Don't take our word for it.

That's Jason Miller, Athletic Director at South Hunterdon High School, on what changed after we sat down with his coaching staff.

We get asked a lot what a culture and leadership session actually looks like. It's not a keynote. It's not a slideshow. It's a working session — head coach, assistants, AD, all in one room, answering the questions that usually never get asked out loud.

What do we stand for?
What does that look like on a Tuesday in the rain?
Are we all coaching the same standard, or ten different ones?

Your athletes already know the answer to that last one. Whether anybody says it out loud or not.

When the staff is aligned, everything downstream gets easier. Practices sharpen up. Accountability stops feeling personal. Kids stop guessing what's expected of them.

Thanks for opening the doors to us, Jason. Appreciate you.

Coaches and ADs — DM the word CULTURE if you want to talk about a session with your staff.

Parents — send this to your athletic director. This is the work that changes a program.

Be where your feet are.

Two schools. Two coaching staffs. One shared belief — culture is built with intention, not inherited.

Thank you to AD Jason Miller and AD Jesse Spencer for bringing us in, and to the coaching staffs at hunterdoncentralregionalhs and South Hunterdon Regional High School for showing up ready to work.

We started with what a championship culture looks like and their WHY. Because if a coach can’t answer why they do this, the athletes will never know what they’re playing for.

Then leadership. Not the captain’s armband version — the daily version. Leaders set the tone. Who sets and maintains the standard when nobody’s watching. Who picks up a teammate having the worst day of their season.

Culture isn’t created by a sign on the wall…It lives in the small big things. How your team leaves the dugout. How they respond to a bad call. How they treat the people who make the game possible. How they shake hands with the opponent after a game. How they run on and off the field/court…

Both coaching staffs already care deeply about their athletes. Now they’ve got a framework to build on that foundation.

Coaches and ADs — if you want to build something special for your program and the student athletes you serve, send us a message. If you want to be different, you gotta do different.

Thank you to AD Justin Farrell and the entire coaching staff Central Bucks South High School for opening up their program and doing the work. Not every staff is willing to look under the hood at their own culture. This one was.

Because culture is not what you say. It’s how you do everything. And the way you do anything is the way you do everything.

How you treat the bus driver. How you leave the dugout. How you line up for the anthem. How you respond after a mistake. How you pick a teammate up when they’re down.

Coach Kevin Guzzo was on fire and led the workshop for D1 Mindset Coach. We started with WHY. Moved into standards — above the line, below the line. Then walked the staff through our MVP process to define their mission, vision, and core principles.

The Titans live by R.O.W. Respect. Ownership. Work ethic. That’s already a strong foundation. Now their leaders are taking it further.

Excited for their follow up virtual sessions on mental performance coaching and pumped to watch them build something even more special.

Coaches and ADs — you have a choice. You can either grow or regress. There’s no in between. If you want to grow, send us a message to learn how we can work with your program or individual teams.

Every athlete I work with wants to do more before a big game.

Get there earlier. Extra reps. Try that thing they saw online last night.

Then they get out there and feel like a stranger in their own body.

Your routine is what tells you this is normal. Change it and you’ve just admitted the moment is bigger than you are.

Whether you’re Ballparks of America, Cal Ripken World Series or not, championship athletes and teams keep the Same warmup. Same breath. Same reset.

The moment gets bigger. You don’t.

Comment MINDSET and I’ll send you our Mental Game Assessment.
