Under the Friday night rain, the New Oxford Colonials and Spring Grove Rockets gave everything they had—grit, heart, and relentless drive. It was a hard-fought battle, soaked in effort and determination from both sides. But what happened after the final whistle was even more powerful than the scoreboard. Players from both teams came together—mud-streaked, exhausted, and united in something deeper than rivalry. They knelt in prayer, shoulder to shoulder, showing that sportsmanship, faith, and respect can shine even brighter than victory. Tonight wasn’t just about football. It was about character. About community. About young athletes reminding us what grace looks like in motion. To the Colonials and the Rockets—thank you for the game, and thank you for the moment. Refs miss calls and make mistakes every single game. But here’s the part most people don’t want to admit: it’s not just because they’re “bad.” According to ESPN, 80% of new referees quit within two years and the #1 reason is rude or abusive parents and coaches. When we run refs off the field, we’re left with fewer refs who have less experience and make more bad calls. If we want better refs, it starts with how we treat them during games and the grace we give them when they mess up. PIAA now offers junior officials the opportunity to start officiating at a younger age to get good experience. A good part time job for those young adults that love sports and want to stay involved. Check out the PIAA website, www.piaa.org, for more information.
