It's a ... it's a....

Well, we don't know yet whether it's a boy or girl, but it's awfully darn cute! Presenting a pair of newly hatched owlets from the Illinois Audubon Society's Bremer Sanctuary near Hillsboro (Montgomery County). Soon, other baby owls will be hatching all over Illinois as part of the 4-H Barred Owl Nest Box Challenge.

If you're one of the 4-H'ers or partners in the 29 counties where nest boxes are located, we hope you'll post your own photos or videos to this page in the coming days!

Early Barred Owl chicks documented by the Illinois Raptor Center in Decatur!

A young Barred Owlet chokes down some scrumptious American Robin for lunch. Mother owl looks on with care and concern while also maintaining an eye out for dangers. We ( the Illinois Raptor Center ) recently reunited another chick with this family and it truly was amazing to watch this adult feed her young with me at a safe distance. If you are interested in the whole story (and other cool pictures) visit the Illinois Raptor Centers page for more!

Here's a super easy way to turn a PVC pipe into a reach pole to see what's in your owl nest boxes. Cut an angle, secure phone with good rubber band (camera lense at top); set timer to take picture; then take a peek in your box!
