If you are planning to go to Silver Creek in the coming weeks, it would be pertinent to read this post from Cinda first.
Fyi, the lower section of Silver Creek now has Ich, also known as white spot disease. This is caused by people catching these trout when the water is too warm, stressing them out and then they have no ability to fight off the parasite. The last time it happened, it was almost a total fish kill. It won't take long before it hits the upper section.
This is devastating as it is a great winter fishery but it won't be if people continue to fish them in this warm water. Show Low is experiencing air temperatures in the mid '80s right now, which is way above normal. As one of my AZGFD friends told me, "Silver Creek is a blood bath right now".
Do with this post as you will, but ideally, we should leave it alone until the water temperatures cool, if we want any trout to survive. At this point in Arizona, we should all be carrying a water thermometer and in a stream, if the water is over 65 °, leave it alone. Fishing early mornings is best.
We are looking at a cool down, later this week. Hopefully, that will help and it's not too late.
Pic for attention.
It's that time again! Come spend some time with DFC tonight while we hear from our very own, Steve Berry, as he tells us about the opportunities on display to fish on the Patagonia in Chile. If you've heard Steve speak before, you know this is not a meeting you want to miss!
Where: Chandler Elk's Lodge - 1775 W Chandler Blvd, Chandler, AZ 85224
When: 10/9 (come as early as 6:30pm to get a drink, have a chat and check out the raffle items).
Good news for all our trout bums that like to get up to Lees Ferry!
The Lees Ferry trout recently received a huge benefit as a result of cooler water being released from Glen Canyon Dam in an effort to control the spread of small mouth bass in the river below the dam. They are using the jet tubes to release water from deeper in Lake Powell (cooler water) which is not only keeping the river temperatures cooler but also creating perfect dissolved oxygen levels in the water. The cooler water also disrupts the smallmouth bass from spawning. This cooler water DO2 is very good for the river and the Lees Ferry trout fishery! .
Join us next Wednesday the 11th at the Elk’s lodge in Chandler for some good laughs, a couple drinks, and some great talk about fly fishing!
Our guest speaker this month will give us some great info on how and where to catch some incredibly large trout in Utah.
See you there!
