The Dogs We Love, and in particular, our Skipper - Katherine Burchhardt 04/05/2022

Many of you know we lost our dog Skipper this year. Here's a reflection I wrote about love, dogs, grief and our capacity to love through grief. If your or someone you know has lost a pet recently, know you are not alone, and I hope you find something helpful in my words in this post. ❤️

Today’s First Choice, Your Coffee Mug. - Katherine Burchhardt 11/30/2021

On the phone in my first client session today we first connected on which mug we were drinking out of. It was early and we were warming up to head into our real topic for the coaching. We described our mugs to each other and why we picked them, virtually cheersing with our cozy mugs. It reminded me of a blog post I wrote a year ago about how the choice of your morning coffee mug can set the tone for your day. Sharing again here in case this is relevant to your morning too ☕️

Today’s First Choice, Your Coffee Mug. - Katherine Burchhardt Lots of people start their day with a cup of coffee, but what if you chose your mug with intention?

A theme that’s come up in probably half of my client coaching sessions this week is some version of giving yourself grace. I find it often happens that some weeks clients seem to be tapping into a similar thread, and there’s a collective sense of something they’re all experiencing. This week the leading sentiment was the idea of giving yourself grace. I’m sharing this with you in case you’re also finding yourself thinking this, you are in good company.

This year has been a lot. (Duh.) And I’m encouraged by the shift I’m hearing in clients to a recognition of the importance of allowing themselves to just “be”, and honor the place they are in now.

Some of the powerful phrases I’ve heard clients say and connect with this week, of what they are committing to for themselves and the grace they are giving:

Breath. Connect to the present moment. Connect to wisdom. Feel proud. Feel strong. Take up space. Recognize your bravery. Your resilience. Find joy in people. Beauty in your power. Remind yourself you’ve done hard things before. Feel the power in this time. Give yourself grace.

I invite you to join them in allowing yourself to breathe, and be who you are right now. 🙏🏻

Although it was my first class in Charleston, walking up to the barre3 class in the park today felt like home. Met with open arms and an air hug, it felt so good to be back in a community I so love. In Palo Alto was my place. Daily 7am classes with the crew brought me incredible grounding, joy and connection. Then moving to San Diego with no barre3 studio I switched to virtual classes. And in the pandemic, my littlest sister and I have been taking classes online together a few times a week (using our to see each other!) Through the years barre3 and their empowering workout and loving community has been a big part of my life. Walking up today to my first in person class, in my new town that I’m making my home, and sweating, fully vaccinated, with welcoming new friends, was everything. 🙏🏻

You may have read the NY Times article introducing the word "languishing" as the dominant emotion during the pandemic - but I also suggest reading a response to this article, suggesting that actually "dormant" might be a fitting word. I share both of these articles, a new movie trailer, and some other interesting reads in wellbeing published in the month of April in this curated blog post.
