The Charlevoix Marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifying race. Both the Marathon and the Half Marathon courses are certified and insured by USATF. There will NOT be an early start for any athlete registered for the Marathon or Half Marathon run. The early start time is for the Walker and Athlete with disabilities categories only.

Welcome to the Charlevoix Marathon! We are so excited to host you on one of the most beautiful running courses in the world. Whether you're trying to qualify for Boston in the full marathon, or challenging yourself at our half marathon, 10km or 5km course, you're in for an amazing start line on the famous Bridge Street, along Lake Michigan and finishing in old town Charlevoix and Round Lake! There are so many reasons that Running Magazine named the Charlevoix Marathon as one of the best "Small Town Marathons" in the nation. Maybe it's the great lodging, where you can roll out of bed and walk to the start line, or it's the beautiful packet pick up/expo location over seeing the Beaver Island Ferry and gorgeous Round Lake. Maybe it's the great dining before and after the race in historic downtown. The course ventures through beautiful Charlevoix neighborhoods, around our ski mountain "Mount McSauba", down the tree lined roads, along the lakeshore and then turn around at the vast Little Traverse Bay. The course has just enough running traffic to feel the excitement of a big marathon, without any of the pains of major crowds. Whatever your reason, come be our guest at one of the best marathons in the United States!

On this day three years ago, we honored local RN Heather Lewis for her bravery outlined in the story below. We are again taking 2027 applications for a free entry into the 2027 event through the Heather Lewis Bravery Award (just message us your story and receive a free entry into next years event!)

At approximately 10:31 on Race Morning, half marathon racer number #1407 Richard Mayer suffered from cardiac arrest 200 yards from the finish line. Mayer was lifeless for approximately two minutes before athlete #2133 Heather Lewis ran to assist Mayer. Lewis is a cardiac nurse in Petoskey, MI and immediately began life saving CPR. It took 7 minutes of CPR and an AED from the brave Charlevoix EMT’s to save this athlete’s life. Heather Lewis went into action without a second thought and saved Richard Mayer’s life and for that act of bravery, we will be presenting the Heather Lewis Award for Bravery at the Charlevoix Marathon annually.

Twenty years ago, the Charlevoix Marathon took its first steps along the shores of northern Michigan. This year, we had to take those steps in a completely different direction — and thanks to the incredible support of our city officials, city police, sheriffs office, community leaders, State government and everyone who believed in this event, we did exactly that. A new course, a new start, a new finish — and the same heart that has carried this race for two decades.

To every runner who toed the line, every volunteer who showed up, and every spectator who cheered from the sidelines — thank you for making our 20th year one we will never forget. This race belongs to this community, and today you reminded us exactly why we do this. See you next year.

Charlevoix Running Co will be open at 5:30 am race morning for all last minute needs! Also Athlete Race Meeting today at 2 pm and 7:30 pm at the Registration Tents. ALSO! Please look both ways before crossing Bridge Street this weekend! We have had great cooperation with the City of Charlevoix Police to keep you safe and they’re asking that you do the same!

For 19 years, the Charlevoix Marathon has run the same beloved route. This year, our traditional course included a boardwalk section that was no longer cleared for runners — and the safety of our athletes will always come first. For a time, that put the 20th running of this event in question.

It didn’t stay in question for long. Thanks to the cooperation of the Michigan DNR, the City of Charlevoix, Charlevoix County, the Charlevoix City Council, and the Charlevoix Police Department, we’re proud to unveil a new course — and we think you’re going to love it.

The new route delivers:
🌊 More shoreline along beautiful Lake Michigan
🌲 The shady, compact dirt roads of Fisherman’s Island State Park
🍄 A pass by the historic Mushroom Houses
🏁 A finish on historic Park Avenue, in the heart of downtown Charlevoix

We know a course change in our 20th year is a big deal, and many of you have run the old route for years. We hear you. What hasn’t changed is the standard: this new course is both Boston Marathon-qualifying and USATF certified — so your time counts exactly where it should…and it has less elevation change!

Twenty years in, and we’re just getting started. We’ll see you at the start line.
