What a great day of training! GM Bobby has been traveling so much, I haven’t had a chance to train with him in several weeks. I remember that when I was new to training, he used to go away for about 2 to 3 months at the end of the year every year. He would travel to Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines. Every time he left, I would train as often and with as many people as I could. I never thought I was good. I still don’t. I’m not putting myself down, I just don’t think in those terms. But I work hard to get better. And in his absence, I sometimes thought I was getting faster. Sometimes I thought I was getting better with control. Sometimes I thought my power was more coordinated.
And it only took one workout with him, when he returned, to convince me otherwise.
And even though it’s only been two or three weeks since we’ve trained, getting together with him and G**o Randy reminded me very much of what that was like. Still trying hard to get better.
And I told him about this feeling. And I think a lot of people have the same experience. Nobody can make you feel slower, less coordinated, more tense, etc. He doesn’t really try to make you feel that way. But training with him is different than training with anybody else I’ve ever met in this art.
He is truly one of a kind!

Taboada Balintawak is based on friendship and brotherhood.
Chris was a good friend.
He was also a good friend to many other people.
When someone passes, it’s always sad.
I am a big believer that the way you honor people is by trying to embody their spirit. So doing some small thing to honor him and help his family is my small part and my way of attempting to do just that.
I don’t care if we raise $500 or five dollars. It’s about the gesture.
I don’t care if you share this post, read it, or purchase a raffle ticket.
But I hope you will consider buying a ticket (or more). Raffle runs for month of August. Some cool weapons and artwork. 100% goes to his family. Please share as well. Pickup at World Camp or message me for other arrangements.
Lots of good people donated items for this. And I’m very grateful.
Raffle runs through the end of the month. Winners will be chosen by random and notified right around 1 September.

When a student has learned the basics of the curriculum and has passed their level six -completion of the art -test, it is a great opportunity and achievement.
The opportunity is in recognizing that they have learned only the basic curriculum, in the easiest way possible. It is not yet a true application. Nothing is truly “realistic.”
That shouldn’t take away from the accomplishment.
The opportunity is in recognizing this fact, and then continuing their education by challenging what they know. Me, too!
Some examples might include learning to do something that they have learned, adding progressively more active or passive resistance. It may include seeking opportunities for countering a technique or a movement.
When I have people in our group trainings that are approaching or at that level, it becomes a whole New World
As an example, we spent time exploring the 12 basic angles of striking, and figuring out how we might be able to pull off a semi advanced technique. This meant that we had to break down the technique as we had learned it. We had to question what elements made the technique what it was. And we had to challenge ourselves to learn to apply it from different positions.
From that perspective, we were able to do semi-advanced one from 1,4,5,7,9,11,12 angle strikes without a lot of adaptations.
We were also able to adapt basic angle strikes two, six, and 10 to pull off that same technique.
This also led to an exploration of some of the footwork and coordination, which yielded a “new“ technique. I had a lot of fun with that one, since it involved incorporating a joint lock. With so many instructors now, who knows if I will get a chance to share it at world camp. But I am excited to share it.
Our Balintawak brother G**o Carlos, our awesome friend Vikko, and other great teachers!!! This looks stellar!

Dean Franco has been kind enough to have me on tomorrow evening EST to promote a seminar we’re doing in Augusta in honor of Chris Nalley.
This is to help grow the guys in the area Chris trained with, help grow their group, and the proceeds will go 100% to the family. Hope you’ll join us.
We also have an online raffle with some FMA weapons and other cool stuff. You can see details on the seminar and live feed here (QR Code).
