With a heavy heart but a very clear mind, I announced my retirement from coaching last night. Though the words were difficult to share, life events have conspired to make it clear that it is time for someone else to lead. I have been existentially fortunate to have shared so many years with kids, parents, other coaches, and the beautiful sport of wrestling. To all the families from Fork Union, Covenant, Washington & Lee, and Charlottesville, it has been my honor and privilege to be trusted, valued, and included in so many vital life moments for the last 25 years. There is never a perfect time to say goodbye and there were many disappointed faces last night, including my own, but I have every confidence that our extraordinary staff will produce a head coach who is up to the task of taking what has become a solid program toward ever greater heights.
Coaching has been among the great honors of my life and it has consumed an enormous proportion of my emotional energy for most of the 21st Century. I owe April more Valentine's Days than I will be able to repay, but as we sell one house and build another, she definitely deserves my full attention and time. Middle age also has meant that I no longer have the inordinate energy I once had that often masked my questionable organizational skills and meager talent, so I am convinced that someone else is best poised to lead the program to the next level of achievement and opportunity.
As anyone who has wrestled knows, the life lessons are as indelible as the relationships and the bonds formed through toil, challenge, and sweat. I will always be there for any of my wrestlers and my relationship with the sport will merely be morphing rather than ending as I expect to don the official's stripes once more in November.
I will cherish the memories, be a friend to the sport, and value every component of my wrestling life for the duration. It has been a wild, beautiful, extraordinary ride that I continue to believe is life-altering for anyone who dares to strive greatly. If you are brave enough to give all that you have to a singular purpose which is always earned but never promised, then you have the courage for any task that life demands.
I'll see you matside.

What an extraordinary day. I got to bed at 3am after leaving VA Beach at 10:30, so a full recap may have to be post-nap. Suffice it to say, we are incredibly proud and three state place winners is almost certainly a school record.

We are ready.
A lot of work by a lot of committed individuals has gone into the culminating experience that is the state championship.
No matter the outcome, our journey toward competitiveness, respectability, and the reality that champions can be manufactured at CHS, has been an unmitigated success.
As to the outcome, we'll see you in VA Beach at 8am when the first whistle blows.
We are ready.
