This year the ALS Fundraiser on Saturday, September 18th will be highlighting Carianne Meystrik, our member Graceanne Meystrik’s mother.
On June 15th, 1998, my mom, Carianne Meystrik, was diagnosed with ALS. She was only 28 years old with 3 young children, age 5 and under, when she received her death sentence of 2-5 years to live. According to the doctors, ALS would take over her body and deprive her of her ability to walk, talk, use her hands, and eventually breathe. She was devastated that she wouldn’t get to grow old with her husband or watch her children grow up. As time progressed, my mom lost the ability to walk, feed herself, and hold her kids. Three years into her diagnosis, she became permanently bound to a wheelchair, and although ALS has robbed her of so many physical activities that she loves-- like working out, running, hiking, etc., it has not taken over her mind, her spirit, or her joy. Flash forward to the present; my mom is still here and bravely battling ALS. She is the strongest, most joyful person I have ever known, and I am blessed to be called her daughter. Through the years, my mom has been an active participant in the ALS Association and works hard every day to advocate for ALS patients who no longer have the strength to advocate for themselves. She also works tirelessly to raise money for ALS research. There is currently no cure for ALS, but there is still hope! There are people out there working hard to find a cure, and we are asking for your help! The ALS Association’s annual fundraiser is right around the corner, and we are hosting this competition as a fun way to raise awareness and money for ALS research. Would you consider supporting this great cause at this CrossFit competition. I guarantee you, my mom would be out there throwing heavy weight up in the air if she could, so let’s “get up for those who can’t” and help find a cure for this terrible disease!
