THE JUDGES WEREN'T TOLD SHE WAS BLIND.

In 2012, Katie Whipple made history at the U.S. Karate National Championships.

Five martial arts schools had declined to teach her. I accepted the challenge.

After just seven months of karate training, she earned GOLD in para karate and SILVER competing against sighted athletes.

Watch her reaction when she realizes she's won her first round. That moment still gets me.

But there's another story behind these achievements.

The teaching system I had developed by 2011 was expanded to meet Katie's needs. Today, that continually evolving system is known as Green Methods™.

EPISODE 8: FOLLOW THROUGH. 🥋

What happens when life gives you every reason to quit?

Nearly 30 years of teaching. Approximately 60,000 classes. Four books. 23 times making martial arts history.

But behind those accomplishments are sacrifices, financial struggles, personal battles, and moments when I wasn't sure how I would keep going.

My wife has nearly died four times in seven years. I've worked multiple jobs to keep my dojo alive. And through it all, I've continued teaching, learning, and developing something I believe can change how people learn.

What if what your child learns in karate doesn't stay in karate?

That's what Episode 5 is about: TRANSFER.
A punch is a punch. A kick is a kick. But underneath those movements, something much bigger can be developing.

Balance. Coordination. Direction. Timing. Sequencing. Body awareness. Focus. The ability to receive information, process it, make corrections, and turn that information into movement.

Then comes the question that matters:

Can they take those abilities somewhere else?
I've watched that happen for years.

And Green Methods™ isn't just for children with special needs. I've used these principles with autistic students, students with physical disabilities, neurotypical children, adults, beginners, and competitive athletes.

Everybody has a starting point. Everybody has to learn.

My job is to figure out where you are, what's getting in the way, and what information you need to move forward.

Because eventually, I don't want what you learn to belong to one exercise, one karate class, or one instructor.

INDEPENDENCE.

Sometimes a child needs assistance to understand something new. There's nothing wrong with that.
But the assistance should have a purpose.

We help.
We teach.
We build understanding.

And then, when they're ready, we begin taking the assistance away.

Because I don't want a child permanently dependent on me, a parent, or a tool.

I want them to reach the moment where they can say:

“I DID THAT MYSELF.”

The assistance isn't the destination.

Independence is.
