The Head of the Hooch regatta is one of the
world’s largest rowing regattas, with more than
2,000 boats and 5,000 rowers competing over two days.

The Head of the Hooch has become known for its friendly, welcoming, inclusive attitude, along with its great competition. It is also known as the “Hooch,” the “Head of the Chattahoochee” and “The Last of the Great Fall Regattas.”

The year is 2017: Despacito was on repeat, the World Rowing Championships were finally back on US soil in Sarasota, Game of Thrones finally told us Jon Snow is actually a Targaryen (no spoiler warnings, it's been eight years), and the Atlanta Falcons were up 28–3 at the Super Bowl (we don't need to talk about what happened next). We've come a long way since 2017!

Make sure you save the date for the 2026 version of HOTH: November 7–8.

Behind every great regatta is a crew you never see on the water 🫶

Here at Head of the H***h, we’re powered every year by incredible volunteers and we were reminded of that this week digging through our media archives. These interviews with the people who make this regatta happen are worth every minute of your time.

Shout out to Wendy Blair for her time, dedication, and love of the H***h 🙌

Not racing this year? Consider volunteering ➡️ Keep your eyes peeled for registration and we’ll share when it’s time to sign up!

On Memorial Day, we think about what it means to have the freedom to do what we love: to show up at the water before the sun rises, to push our bodies, to compete, to be part of a community that spans generations.

That freedom isn’t free. Today we honour the men and women who gave everything so we could keep living and doing the things that fill our lives with meaning.

We are grateful today, and every day. Happy Memorial Day. 🇺🇸

Our oldest competitor last year was 85 years old, and absolutely crushed it on the water!

At Head of the H***h we are proud that our regatta is for everyone. Seasoned racers, comeback crews, first-timers, and yes, rowers who refuse to hang up their oars.

No matter your age, there's always space for you at the H***h!

From 200 boats on the Chattahoochee River in 1982 to more than 2,200 entries in downtown Chattanooga today 🚣

Head of the H***h has grown into one of the world’s largest rowing regattas, built by volunteers, athletes, and a community that continues to shape the sport year after year.

As we look ahead to the 2026 Head of the H***h on November 7–8, we’re celebrating the history behind “The Last of the Great Fall Regattas."

If you have any early photos from the beginning years of the regatta, send them our way. We’d love to help preserve and share the history of Head of the H***h!

The year is 2009: Lady Gaga is brand new, Usain Bolt just broke his own world record, Barack Obama was inaugurated, and we were still choosing between the BlackBerry and iPhone. Sixteen years and a few software updates later, we're still racing at Head of the H***h.

Save the date: November 7–8. And maybe we'll see you in the 2041 throwback post 😉

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 🧠

If you or someone you know needs support, these Chattanooga-based resources are here to help:

• NAMI Chattanooga: free support groups, education & crisis resources | namichattanooga.org
