Bodfish Bicycles and Quiet Mountain Sports Cycling is climate action…and we are cycling every chance we get. He also developed and orchestrated the first Wildflower Century ride that same year. Shasta.

This business was started by Chuck Elliot who has used the nom de plume Bodfish for the last 48 years (1973). His columns, under the headings...Outback with Bodfish/ Biking with Bodfish appeared in various publications for decades. In 1976 he started an offroad bicycle race that is still held annually in Chico's Bidwell Park called The Bidwell Bump....purported to be the oldest offroad bicycle race on the planet. In 1979 he published Butte Country Bicycle Journeys which described rides both on and offroad in California's northern Sacramento Valley and all the way to the Pacific Coast. In 1981 he published a more extensive book of NorCal bicycle trips called Cycling in the Shadow of Shasta with Bodfish, it also featured on and offroad rides, everyone of which featured a view of Mt. In 1983 Chuck Elliot published the first mountain bike/gravel bike book titled...Cycling The California Outback with Bodfish. In 1990 Chuck published California Dream Cycling with Bodfish while performing stay at home Dad duties and teaching part-time. His son, the "microfish" grew up in the bicycle shop and now has his own business: Pup And Suds Productions.

What a trip…we’ve been roughly following a route we pedaled nearly forty eight years ago…Oregon, Washington to hwy 20 which we followed to Mt. Vernon, Winthrop and off to Idaho.

A post-rain ride that smelled sooo good. We were lucky to sneak in a thirty mile pedal early Friday just before the thundering herd of holiday visitors arrived in northern Plumas County. We are loving all of our hours in the saddle this Summer.

Sunday ride…the entire length of California State Highway 172…twice! One thousand foot of climbing on acoustic bicycles. Only twenty miles but, a fantastic outing with refreshments provided by our friends in Mineral, Ca. We parked at Highlands Resort. Did I mention…brand new taffy-smooth pavement the entire way.

I’ll say it again….a class one e-bike is a marvelous thing…no short steep hill dread, no headwind worries, no nagging knee pain and no competitive angst. Yet, it is a bicycle not a moped, not overpowered, not too heavy (feels like a touring bike with a couple of panniers). We are getting 50 miles between charges (400w). If you run out of juice it’s not that difficult to pedal on. It’s not spoiling us …we ride our acoustic bikes 75% of the time. Furthermore when you park your 48lb. bike in favor of your 18lb. bike, it feels like magic all over again.

We have a half dozen bicycle rides that lead from our door into the hills on quiet roads. We have pedaled these routes hundreds of times over the last 4+ decades. Lately the pre-ride discussion includes the e-bike option. (The hills and the headwinds become easier and range increases making e-biking an attractive option.) However, are we losing some of our fitness here?…and, what level of fitness do we need in our seventies?

Oh WOW, a friend just reminded me that The Bidwell Bump bicycle race is 50 years old next week. The only off-road bicycle race I ever organized took place in Upper Park, Bidwell Park during the third week of August in 1976. We had fourteen participants, or was it sixteen? Lisa Jo was the uphiller on the Women’s ‘team’. Corinne K. was the downhiller.Awards were given at La Salles garden restaurant that same evening. Everyone won a prize.
