I had a dog get this. I haven’t let a c**n live since.

PSA: The vet that diagnosed this for me said there is very little understanding as to what is transmitted to set this off. Her explanation was that it triggers an autoimmune reaction where the dogs immune system attacks what was transmitted. Unfortunately, the nerves that control leg motion, which are at the bottom of the cervical column, are also attacked. This disrupts the signal from the brain which controls the legs. The dog maintains bowl, head and tail control. The dogs body has to repair these damaged nerves before function is restored. It typically last 2 day to 2 weeks. Severe cases can include respiratory failure and death. It sets in 5-8 days after the encounter. Over 24-48 hours the dog will gradually lose function of the legs. Our dog was immobilized for 6 months. She did regain the ability to walk and live another 6 years. It is compared to Guillain-Barré syndrome in humans.

Coonhound Paralysis - Just FYI it is real. My girl Lina apparently has it. Started yesterday she had trouble standing and by end of the day she would not stand at all. Took her to the vet today - we believe she has Rac**n paralysis - following her battle with a rac**n about 8 days ago. She was out in the shallow marsh in a field of lily pads - I kept calling her and trying to get to her - finally she pulled the rac**n close enough I could get it off of her. It was a really fun walk with the dogs.

May take awhile before she can walk again. May sound weird but right now I am relieved - I feared the worst and figured I was losing her today.

Headed out to Missouri Gun and Quail for some mother daughter training today. With a little luck, Briar will finally get the UT P1 she’s danced around the last couple of years. Vixen is looking good too getting ready for her NA test. I hope I can tell them apart this fall!

My favorite Swedish family, the Edling’s, have been busy with Traditions Nordic Knucklehead, Felix. Isabelle Edling is an extremely dedicated trainer. She and Felix have been all over including Maine, Kansas and Missouri this summer getting him ready for his fall Natural Ability Test. Reports back are that he is doing great. I really love how this guy is put together!

Updated Breeding Announcement: Traditions Shorthairs is excited to announce our next and last breeding of Sundance Tangled in Tradition, “Briar” to CRK Legend, “Skip”.

Briar has produced phenomenal dogs with a whopping 11 out of 13 getting a Prize 1 Natural Ability score (the other 2 were Prize 2) and an average of 110 points! Better than that, her puppies have proven to be outstanding in the field and as loving family members. Briar and I have a special connection and it makes me happy that she continues to pass her amazing attributes forward.

Skip is a young up and comer. I’ve had my eye on him since he was a puppy and he has matured into every bit of the dog I hoped he would be. Skip checks all the boxes with gusto… great nose, athletic, loves the water, cooperative, confirmation and happy. Mike Mitchell and Fred Rice have spent time preparing him for his Utility Test this fall and we all have high hopes he’ll do great.

This breeding heavily leans on the work done by Sundance German Shorthaired Pointers and follows Fred’s commitment to line breeding. These dogs will be athletic, hard hunters with great noses. They will have sound confirmation and settle in nicely at your feet at the end of the day.

What a day yesterday! Had an opportunity to do some training with a couple of the pups from Briar x Josh litter. Felix, Sadie and Vixen all looked good working pigeons at the Sundance Ranch. Indy got some reps in and is making some real progress getting ready for his Utility Test this fall. AND… I was reminded of a lesson I already knew. Always close the back hatch in the camper shell. Lucking no one got hurt. As a matter of fact, Briar ends up taking a stroll and comes back with a duck😂 while I was cleaning up. All’s well that ends well!
