Meet M**FShake #75
M**F first started skating with SCRD in 2007, joining the Bitch Doctors and later the B-Unit as a blocker.
Her derby journey has been filed with unforgettable moments, from passing out derby flyers during a black-tie dinner at the Duquesne Club to showing a taxidermy beaver around Time Square. One of her favorite memories was playing against Gotham at the Crash Pad. They got absolutely crushed, but it was still a derby dream come true.
Her coaching journey began with the
Pittsburgh Derby Brats, where she spent seven years coaching while her daughter, Sports Brawl, played for eight. Once Sports aged out, she decided to continue her support by returning to SCRD. She’s coached, run training workshops, and helped countless skaters find their place in the sport. Her favorite part of coaching is watching someone go from their very first practice to finally having that moment where their derby brain kicks in and everything clicks. M**F has found that derby is about a lot more than nice uniforms, cool headshots, and MVPs. It’s taught her self-love, confidence, and that being strong, competitive, loud, and assertive is something to embrace.
Her advice to new skaters is to set attainable goals, perfect what you’re good at, and to always be coachable. Derby is a journey, and nobody walks into it a superstar. As M**F puts it, “Ego is the #1 killer of talent.”
For M**F, SCRD’s 20th Anniversary means that for the last two decades, the City of Pittsburgh has been a little more badass.
