Excellent point!

The Smithmoor Rocky Mountain Regional is in the books. It was a huge success and was record number of shooters. The range expansion served very well. Thank you to the Smith family for the wonderful hospitality. We enjoyed great food and good times. So pleasing to compete with great people at such a nice range. The only shoot bigger now is held at the Whittington Center. The Smith family has turned this event into the second largest 22BPCR I know of. 58 shooters with room for more. Smithmoor Range grows while others whither. The atmosphere here is nothing short of warm and sincerely grateful to the community.

The good times continue in Wyoming. The new expansion of Smithmoor Range is great and handled a fairly large crowd with ease.
Conditions started out as interesting but by the time we began the winds were hardly more than a breath and were reasonable all day. The temperature was about perfect. One more day to go. Look at these scores. 38 for the best, a 35, 3 shooters hit 34, 6 shooters 33. Tough crowd in these parts. Peruse that 38, 9 chickens! This was early and seeing that told me this wouldn’t be easy!
Range church at 7:00 and the shooting follows around 8:00-8:30. Pretty cool to have a shooting preacher! Josh will have a bang up service. Sorry not sorry. Couldn’t resist.

We had great conditions. We had tough conditions. Some of us were talking to ourselves over the wind. Congratulations to the winners and record breakers. Thank you Dick for a great match.

Yep. Kills every time.
Pressure is part of the competitive game. But the most damaging kind isn’t from your coach, your team, or even your competitors—it’s the pressure you place on yourself.
Self-imposed pressure often sounds noble:
“I must win to prove I’m good enough.”
“I have to shoot a perfect score today.”
“I can’t let anyone down.”
But these internal demands become emotional weights that compress your nervous system, freeze your breathing, and lead to rushed or erratic shots. This pressure doesn’t sharpen focus—it scatters it. And once the mind splits between performance and expectation, flow state becomes nearly impossible.
Why We Do It:
Fear of failure.
Fear of disappointing others.
An identity tied solely to results.
The irony? The more pressure you pile on, the harder it becomes to reach peak performance. You disconnect from the process and obsess over the outcome. It’s like trying to aim your bow while holding your breath—eventually, something breaks.
Releasing the Pressure Valve:
Shift from outcome to process. Ask yourself: “Did I commit to my process?” not “Did I win?”
Breathe deeply before each shot. A long exhale sends a physiological signal to the brain that you are safe and present.
Practice detachment. Understand that your worth is not based on your results, and that pressure is a choice—not a fact.
When pressure becomes optional, performance becomes freer. True power in archery isn’t about forcing success—it’s about trusting your preparation and releasing the need to control the outcome.

The things we do. Haven’t had a bow for over 30 years but damn this is fun. Sort of like coming home.

New must have. These gun slickers are great. Wish I’d gotten them before the Quigley. That’s a 28” barreled low wall wearing a scope hiding in there. Store’s it’s own case about the size of your fist. Waterproof fabric, let it rain!

The latest gear looks like a must have. Waterproof fabric in a stretch package. Protects your firearm from the elements and when it’s not saving the world it’s in its own case about the size of your fist. Wish I’d had these a lot sooner. Oh, that’s my scoped low wall with 28” barrel. Gonna keep rain and even dust off my gun while it’s being toted around. Thank you Joe Scott for the tip!
