FREE STEEL CHALLENGE PRACTICE MATCH TOMORROW

Hello shooters,

I've just posted a free Steel Challenge practice match on Practiscore for tomorrow, starting at 10:00 a.m. Depending on how many people show up, we will just shoot in one or two bays and switch stages around. I'm thinking we will run the normal first 5 strings in each stage just like a match, and record it, then allow people to do some practice runs before switching up. Bring lots of bullets!

Weather is looking pretty good and the range is in good shape.

Register at:

See you on the range,

Hello shooters,

Brendan Tait is starting affiliated USPSA matches in Cheyenne on the second Saturday of the month, with the first one on June 13th. The club name is Capital City Shooters and they will be held at the Otto Road Shooting Range, 1531 Otto Road, Cheyenne, WY. The first match is already on Practiscore at:

https://practiscore.com/june-2026-uspsa/register

This will replace the Defensive Pistol matches that Glenn has been putting on for years. You don't need to be a USPSA member to shoot these and you won't notice a lot of difference between the match styles. Although, they might not be quite as "western" as some of Glenn's stages were! :)

I also want to give a huge shout-out to Glenn for what he contributed to the competitive shooting sports in Cheyenne. He started these matches, designed the stages, built up the equipment, and donated thousands of hours for our shooting pleasure.

THANK YOU GLENN!!!

See you on the range,

-Mike

Action Pistoleros and Pistoleras,

We got weathered out last month so here we go again!

Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Sanctioned Action Pistol at ORSR, Saturday May 16. Open to everyone and all experience levels. Match fee is $30. Junior shooters (minimum age 12) shoot FREE. Mandatory Safety meeting for all shooters is at 0845 and shooting begins immediately after. 192 rounds are required. CMP Rules apply.

Link to CMP Rules: https://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2026-Action-Pistol-Rules.pdf

Scores are used for classification purposes in all the divisions. Great opportunity for new shooters to get classified and seasoned shooters to improve on an existing classification or get classified in a different division. Also, this match will be great preparation for shooters traveling to Columbia, MO later this month to compete in the CMP Bianchi Cup International Action Pistol Tournament.

Why get classified? There are many benefits for getting classified and belonging to the CMP -

Getting a classification with the CMP (Marksman to High Master) validates your shooting skills through a recognized, standardized ranking system. It provides official proof of achievement, unlocks opportunities to earn the prestigious Distinguished Pistol Badge, and allows you to compete against peers of similar skill levels.
General Benefits of CMP Participation:
Access to Surplus Fi****ms: Members of CMP-affiliated clubs (Otto Road Range is CMP affiliated) can purchase military surplus rifles/pistols (e.g., M1 Garand and 1911 Pistols)
Advanced Training: Access to Marksmanship classes, various shooting clinics, and regional CMP events.
If you don’t have a CMP Competitor number follow instructions in this link (its free) https://thecmp.org/competitions/register-for-a-ct-number/

CMP Waiver: CMP regulations require each competitor to complete this waiver (print out sign and bring it to the match) https://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Affidavit.pdf

Junior competitor parent consent waiver: https://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/ParentalConsent2026.pdf

Course of fire: The Moving Target (48 shots) Rule 6.2.3, The Practical (48 Shots) Rule 6.2.1, The Barricade (48 shots) Rule 6.2.2, The Falling Plates (48 shots)Rule 6.2.3

Competitive Divisions: Open (Rule 4.2.1), Open Rimfire (Rule 4.2.2) Metallic Sight (Rule 4.2.3), Metallic Sight Rimfire(Rule 4.2.4) Production (Rule 4.2.5), Production Rimfire(Rule 4.2.6) Production Optic (Rule 4.2.7) Production Optic Rimfire (Rule 4.2.8)

“Chamber Of Commerce” weather here in ‘Ol Cheyenne for the first Action Pistol match of the 2026 season at Otto Rd Range. 27 shooters took on the traditional moving target, the practical, the plates and one wild card —"Bill Drill X3" Since this match was not sanctioned ,I like to plug in an odd event and modify it for action pistol scoring. This month it was “Bill Drill X3” which is an ICORE Classifier modified with a par time and using NRA AP1 targets. Total rounds fired for the match 180 and maximum possible score 1880-180X.

On squad 3 there were two Practical scores not recorded. Doug Merle and Carlos Sierra. A reminder to all competitors please check your squad tablets before moving on to another event to ensure your score has been recorded.

A BIG ‘Ol Wyoming welcome to some new shooters who opted to take a “leap of faith” into the world of NRA /CMP Action Pistol - notably Ray and Tanya Estes, Doug Bourma. and Chris Horoho. Also, welcome back to Mike Morabito and Rory Grubb after a long hiatus. Our new shooters were given the option to shoot the "short course” which involved shooting no further than 15 yards, start from low ready and only 24 shots fired per event. So, their scores will reflect less shots fired. NRA and CMP Action Pistol is a difficult enterprise and it can be discouraging to new shooters starting out. Realize that everyone started with scores below personal expectations- the key is to be resilient, and work on getting better by practicing and participating in more local matches.

Top shooters today:

1st Open: Alex Ragulsky 1774-133X (High overall, 1st Grand Senior, 1st MilitaryVeteran)
2nd Open: Chris Rhodes 1670-106X
3rd Open: Rory Grubb 1659-94X

1st Metallic: Phil Kroczek 1749-110X

1st Production Optic: John Granner 1650-112X
2nd Production Optic: Scott Starks 1636-99X
3rd Production Optic: Jon Briggs 1574-84X (1st Law Enforcement)

1st Open Rimfire: Brian O’Boyle 1752-105X
2nd Open Rimfire: Chris Rhodes 1695-113X
3rd Open Rimfire: Glenn Herbst 1652-82X (1st Senior)

Other special categories:

1st Woman: Amanda Kroczek 1506-78X

1st Active duty military: Chris Horoho 906-26X

Next three matches: April 18 (Non-Sanctioned) May 16 (CMP Sanctioned), June 20 (NRA Sanctioned) All matches will be listed on PRACTISCORE for registration. In rare cases I will allow a ‘walk-up” registration once —after that it must be on PRACTISCORE —so hop on the PRACTISCORE Train.

I’d like to thank Nick Fuerst for his indefatigable efforts to help me not only set up the match, but also be an RO and coach our new shooters through the process. Also, a big thank you to all the competitors who helped take down the match equipment and secure it in the CONEX.

Complete results of this months match posted on PRACTISCORE at this link: https://practiscore.com/results/html/d3e0e5e2-56aa-4ade-9d51-d5834e06f4b1

Good shooting all —thanks and see you next month!
