Something that came up today.

This is the car the made me rethink racing on the street. I took a break after racing this car. There were a couple of races leading up to this race that I'll talk about at a later date.

It's 1998 towards the end of summer, I think it may have been September. We were hanging out at Super Shops in Chicago Heights at the time. I hadn't been out for a few weeks with work. So we pull up and there's a black Chevy ll there that I haven't seen before. The guys that were regulars were telling me this guy had been coming out from the north side and had been racing guys slower than me and winning by half a car or less. So they are in my ear that I need to jump on this car and get their money back.
Now to preface this. I had been having to set cars out in races in the weeks before this just to get guys to race. I'll tell those stories soon.

The owner was Mark Mje Enw. Who I've never met before. I look at the car and it's small tire, small block, no nitrous. I go back by my car and talk to some of the guys. These guys that have been racing Mark were about a second slower than me. My buddy Scott Lavin says man, I looked under that car and it's got a serious oil pan. I don't think you want to give him any spots. I tell him, these guys are saying he only beat me by a fender or half a car. Scott says, it's probably not a good idea. I ask another friend Al Talirico, who's been street racing since the 60s, if he wants to put any money in. He say, I don't think it's a good idea, but puts $20 in. Mark says, I'm not opening the hood. I offer him 5 cars. He takes it and says if you win the hood stays closed. If I win I'll show you under the hood, but only you. Ok, let's do it.
We race and I get beat by what I spotted him.
After the race, I get a flashlight and we go a little ways down the street and he opens the hood. Now I'm not a small block guy. So I am just looking for nitrous because I have no idea what the heads are or if it's a race block or anything. After looking at the engine for a minute I walk back. Scott asks, what did it look like? I said I don't know what kinda small block it was. But it has an intake like a spider. 😆

After that I put the car away and took a break from racing. Pulled the engine out in October of that year and it is still apart.
