“We need it!”
I asked one of my Oakmont students why she thinks it’s important for older adults to take chair yoga and she immediately started listing all the places she’s had fractures. 😮
Then came the little edit at the end:
“Well…we’ll just keep that between us.” 😂
THIS is one of my favorite parts of teaching at senior communities💕
Yes, we move.
Yes, we work on strength, balance, mobility and body awareness.
Yes, movement matters especially as we age. Physical activity can help support strength, function, balance and bone health.
But we also TALK.
We laugh.
We share stories.
We commiserate about our bodies.
We celebrate what they CAN do.
And sometimes we have a little “you and me” moment that stays between us. 😉
Women are especially important to this conversation. Osteoporosis is a major cause of fractures in postmenopausal women, and women also tend to live longer than men… meaning we have a LOT of years of life to protect, participate in and enjoy. In the U.S., women born in 2024 have a life expectancy of 81.4 years, compared with 76.5 years for men.
Maybe that’s why I love this kind of intergenerational female connection so much.
I get to learn from women who have decades more life experience than I do, while hopefully helping them feel a little stronger, steadier and more connected to their bodies.
Yoga class becomes more than yoga.
It becomes community. ❤️
That’s what I mean when I say **Mindful Movement, Accessible for All.**
