On August 1st at the Obama Presidential Center, we celebrate them, including a video tribute to Mayfair alumna Michelle Obama. Ms. Peggy Sutton is a prominent figure in the world of dance education, known for her dedication to preserving and promoting the art form and is currently considered “Chicago Dance Royalty”
Born into a legacy of dance, Peggy Sutton is the daughter of renowned Tap Master Mr. Tommy Sutton. Her father founded the Mayfair Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago, Illinois, in 1957. His vision was to provide dance as a cultural and physical asset for the children in his community, especially those who were underserved due to segregation at the time. The academy grew significantly, impacting thousands of students. In 1978, Ms. Sutton took over the leadership of Mayfair Academy, from her father. For over 40 years, until 2020, she served as executive director, teaching and mentoring over 20,000 students. In 2004 she expanded Mayfair’s reach in opening Mayfair Too! in Chicago’s South Suburbs and in 2010 spearheading the “Mayfair on the Move” campaign relocating Mayfair from it historic location on east 79th St to a new location on 87th and Bennett Ave becoming the Mayfair Performing Company. She was instrumental in managing the day-to-day operations and creative direction of all Mayfair classes and productions. Ms. Sutton also headed the Tap department, where she taught the internationally recognized “Tommy Sutton Tap Method” developed by her father. Under her direction, Mayfair productions were staged at many of Chicago’s finest cultural venues.
