Wash U Squash

Hi guys! The school year is under way and the squash season is about to begin! For anyone interested in playing squash recreationally or competitively at WashU, come see us at the Fall Activities Fair on September 6th at Mudd Field at 4:30! Feel free to email [email protected] for any questions!

During the weekend of January 26-27, we took a quick weekend trip to Palo Alto, CA to play in a tournament hosted by Stanford University. We played two matches against UC Berkeley and one match against Stanford University. We started it off with a tough loss against Stanford: ( #31) Stanford University vs. ( #42) WashU 9-0. We had three matches go to four games as well as Senior ( #5) Kento Sasada bringing his match to five games. We continued with our first match against UC Berkeley: ( #33) UC Berkeley vs. ( #42) WashU 8-1. Sophomore ( #2) Reid Parisi pulled off an upset defeating their player in four games. We finished off the tournament in a positive note taking two more matches than the first match: ( #33) UC Berkeley vs. ( #42) WashU 6-3. Freshmen ( #1) Russell Scharf and ( #7) Apaar Anand both had extremely close matches both going to five games; this match could have gone both ways. Overall, this tournament was an extremely challenging tournament for our players and gave us an insight to what the top teams look like on the west coast. We were also able to escape the freezing temperatures in St. Louis for a couple of days and enjoy the beautiful Stanford University campus. We also had a visit from some of our wonderful alumni, Mark Temple Eric Marcus Lyall Cooper who helped cheer us on. Thanks for coming! Our next tournament is the final tournament of the year (CSA Nationals) which will take place on February 15-17 at Yale University. This past weekend WashU Men's Club Squash ( #47) competed at a tournament hosted by Fordham University in Fordham, NY. Teams invited include, NYU ( #66), Fordham University ( #32), Bryant University ( #65), Swarthmore ( #43), and Lehigh University ( #40). We went 3-2 for the weekend winning against Lehigh (8-1), Bryant (9-0), and Swarthmore (9-0), and losing against NYU (1-8) and Fordham (4-5). With 7 freshmen out of our 9 starting players, the WashU Men's team upset two teams with higher rankings and had a very close loss to a Fordham varsity squash team. Bo Anderson ( #4) and Christopher Ferguson ( #5) made impressive debuts at this tournament both winning key matches (3-0) against strong Lehigh opponents. This tournament puts the WashU Men's Club Squash team at (6-2) on the season and ends the calendar year on a good note. In addition, Wash U Women's Squash had a strong first tournament of the year winning both their matches against NYU and Fordham University. We will take this momentum into our next tournament at Stanford University on January 25th, 2019.

Last weekend Wash U squash competed in Charlotte at the SE Invitational Collegiate Squash Tournament against Davidson, Duke, NC State, UNC, University of Richmond, and William and Mary. The Wash U squash team, featuring five freshman, won all four of its matches against good competition. Although Wash U did not compete against Duke or Davidson, the team is looking forward to its upcoming schedule playing its next matches at the Fordham tournament on december 1st.

Wash U Squash had a successful season, achieving a 3rd place finish in the H-division of nationals, only behind Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt.
Thank you all for such an amazing season, especially coach Puertas for all his hard work! We are looking forward to next season especially with such a young team, and the addition of the two new squash courts in the Grimm Racquet Courts.

As the MLB Postseason roars on, let's remember that time our own Coach Puertas helped Matt Holliday and David Freese learn squash.
