“I felt sad at seeing the end of Joe Louis. It was hard to take. In his dressing room later, blood seeped from cuts above both of his eyes. One of his eyes was swollen shut. I was with him all the way, but it was like trying to console an old, blind man. Squinting in pain and embarrassment, he was unable to put on his pants or locate his shoes. I bent down and worked his feet into his shoes and tied the laces. I helped him out of the ballpark.”

“I trained full time with Sonny. Everything he did, I did. We often ate dinner together, and afterward took a walk. To say that Liston was a man of few words is to say that the sun is warm. Normally, he just glared. So when he suddenly began talking about himself on one of our walks, I hung on every syllable.

He talked about the 1964 fight with Cassius Clay in Miami Beach, when he lost the title that he'd taken two years before from Floyd Patterson. Some people point to that Clay fight as proof that boxing is, or was, fixed. But the Sonny Liston I got to know was too mean and too proud—and had come from too far behind—to throw the championship away on purpose.”

“I'll describe what Roberto Duran is like: centered, a good person, pretty friendly, easygoing, a good father, a good friend. I try to make friends even if they hate me. I'm not interested in those who criticize me and talk about me. I have a quiet life, I don't bother anybody. I'm not interested in money, I could care less if you have $20 million and I have $3, it doesn't interest me. I'm a happy man, I'm not asking anybody for anything. And if I want something, I call some friends on the phone and they lend me whatever I need, and after the fight, or whatever, if I owe, I pay. That's Roberto Duran.”

Mike Tyson’s Biggest Problem Wasn’t His Chin—It Was His Boxing IQ Under Pressure

People love saying Mike Tyson was “mentally weak.”

I think that's far too simplistic.

Tyson's real problem was that once an opponent disrupted his preferred rhythm, he didn't always have a reliable second plan.

At his best, Tyson was extraordinary. Explosive entries, vicious combinations, head movement, body attacks, and frightening finishing ability. He could turn a heavyweight fight into chaos before his opponent had time to think.

But what happened when the first plan didn't work?

That's where the cracks appeared.

Buster Douglas refused to panic. He survived Tyson's early pressure, established his jab, and made Tyson work at a pace Tyson wasn't controlling.

Evander Holyfield then showed another problem: he was willing to fight physically, disrupt Tyson's rhythm, and refuse to be intimidated.

Lennox Lewis went even further—he kept Tyson at range and made him solve a technical puzzle.

That's why I don't buy the idea that Tyson simply “lost because he wasn't hungry anymore.”

His opponents eventually figured out something important:

Don't fight Mike Tyson's fight.

Force him to think.

Force him to reset.

Make him fight beyond his preferred range.

And suddenly the most terrifying heavyweight on earth looked much more human.

But here's the part Tyson deserves credit for:

His ceiling was extraordinary.

Few heavyweights ever combined speed, power, explosiveness, and offensive technique the way young Tyson did.

Prime Tyson had one of the highest peaks in heavyweight history—but his ability to adapt when Plan A failed wasn't on the level of the very best all-around heavyweights.

"I lost my first fight at the Boys Club at 11 years old and quit the team. My mother told me I had to go back because she didn't raise no quitter. I lost a second fight and quit again and still my mother wouldn't let me. She made me go back and try again." - Evander Holyfield

'People like to imagine boxers as self-sustaining warriors. And we're not. I've been around former world champions who are ashamed. They have nothing to show for their careers, nowhere to go, and no one to help them when the roar of the crowd is gone. Unlike baseball, football and basketball, boxing has no pension fund or support system. There are no college scholarships for boxers. I was one of the lucky ones. I made good money and put some of it aside.'

'I have always been opposed to what is still a common practice of a boxer being taken clean away from an ordinary life when he begins to train for a fight. It is more often than not assumed that a boxer, so as to be 'prepared,' must be taken away to some outlandish place, away from all friends and acquaintances, so as to be free to think of fight, fight, fight from morning till night. It is not supposed that he is competent to think and decide for himself; he is not allowed to do so. He is put to bed; he is wakened up; he has no choice of food, and he is physicked and pampered. I have been in some training camps where fresh air, I have suspected, is not wanted - windows sealed, doors shut tight, and altogether a premium put on an unnatural mode of existence.

Every boxer should have more than an elementary knowledge of hygiene; no boxer should be made a prisoner when in training; no boxer should be called upon to spend his days with gloves, dumb-bells and sparring partners as his sole companions. Training should be regarded not as something extraordinary, but as an everyday business. And it should be done to schedule. There must be method; a time for everything.'

'I didn't lose a fight until I was eleven, but when I did, to a kid named Cecil Collins, it devastated me. I came home and told Mama I was quitting the sport. Big mistake.

'You go on back in that ring and beat that boy!' She said. This from a woman who didn't want me boxing to begin with. 'You don't quit until you do what you set out to do!' So I went back and fought Cecil again. And again I lost. 'Go back and fight him again!' Mama said.

I did, and this time I beat him. It felt wonderful, like I'd just climbed Mt. Everest or hit the winning home run in the World Series. 'Well there you go!' Mama said, beaming. 'Now you can quit!'

I didn't quit - there were some things even my wise Mama didn't understand - but you get the point. If I hadn't gone back in there and tried again and again, I probably would have spent a large part of my life regretting it. But Mama knew how I'd feel once I won, all proud and happy. Her attitude wasn't, 'See? I was right.' It was, 'Don't you feel good having finished what you started?' It was that feeling that shaped my later approach to life, not the fact that I'd done what Mama asked, and that's why the lesson was so valuable. It really came from me; Mama just pushed me to get there.'
