30 years ago today, Evanston-based Century Publishing Company released its 68-page premiere issue of BOWLING DIGEST as complimentary to Chicago-area businesses involved with bowling (bowling centers, sporting goods stores, bowling pro shops, magazine stands and numerous varsity/apparel shops) before going into worldwide distribution the following week. The significance of this debut issue was both a typo on the front cover along with two missing pages (pages 59-60). Sometime last year, a mint-conditioned copy was purchased on Ebay for $25.00. Another Chicago factor was area bowling pro Bill Spigner's Bowling Clinic column which existed during the magazine's entire 21-year existence.
