ICYMI: CPS athletes ✨dazzled✨ at girls track state finals this past spring.

This year, South Shore’s Jordan Hamb (Wisconsin commit) won the 2A 100 hurdles in 13.90 seconds and the 2A triple jump at 39 feet, 0.5 inches. She also finished third in the 100 (12.29) and the long jump (17-9.75).

In the 2A 4×400, Simeon’s K’saundra Frison, Calyce Douglas, Serenity Esper and Sa’Myah McCraney won in a season-best 3:55.54.

In Class 3A, Public Leaguers won seven medals in individual events and two more in relays.

Young triple jumper Courtney Burt finished second at 39-0.5.

Young high jumper Jordyn Ellis took third with a personal-best clear of 5-7.25. She won another medal by anchoring the Dolphins to fifth place in the 4×400 in a season-best 3:52.23

Young’s Kayla Riepe also won a pair of medals, taking fourth in the 400 (PR of 54.82) and joining Ellis, Julia Ijimakin and Phoenix Higginbottom on the 4×400.

Ainsley Carter was a double medalist for Lane, taking eighth in the 1,600 (PR of 4:57.99) and anchoring the 4×800 to third. Antonina Leary, Amy Herzog, Kaila Burns and Carter ran a season-best 9:06.26.

Also winning 3A medals were Kenwood’s Kamdyn Redway, who finished fifth in the 300 hurdles (44.28); Ag. Science’s Taya Rice, who was seventh in the triple jump (37-7.75) and Jones’ Samaya Butler-Batista, who was ninth in the 100 (12.40).

Due to extreme heat, all outdoor athletic activities are CANCELLED for Wednesday, September 2.

Practices may be conducted indoors.

ICYMI: Whitney Young Water Polo, who had captured three top-four finishes in the IHSA State Tournament, added another top finish to their trophy case, taking home 4th place in state.

Coming off its City Championship earlier this spring, and what many considered a surprise upset over Lyons in the Super-Sectional, Whitney Young advanced to the state semifinals, where it took on Brother Rice, falling in a close 16-13 game.

One of the top players in the state and in the program, Yahir Jimenez, continued his dominant performance in the loss, totaling four goals, and continued his stellar senior season in the third-place game, totaling three more goals in a hard-fought 10-8 loss to York.

“Of course I wanted at least a second or first, we knew we had it in us, but once we look at the big picture, we weren’t even supposed to be here or make it out of our sectional,” said Jimenez. “Look how far we made it with this young team.”

Lane’s girls lacrosse program has gotten its groove back.

The Champions dominated the early years of Public League girls lacrosse, but had seen Payton make a bit of a recent jump, with the Grizzlies winning two of the last four city championships.

Lane won the title last year with a dominant win over Taft, so it was looking for back-to-back titles when it took on Jones in the title game May 9 at Lane Stadium.

Standing in its way, however, was Jones, a team that hadn’t made it to a CPL championship game in its program history and its superstar Ariel Tvishor. The Jones senior broke the CPL career scoring record, set by Lane’s Gwen Ryan last season, by finishing her outstanding career with 238 career goals.

Unfortunately for her and for Jones, the Champions were just too good on championship day and came out on top, 11-7, to claim their eighty city title.

“This is amazing, we’ve worked so hard for this,” Lane’s Norah Rosenberg said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Jones is really good, but we kept our head in it, didn’t let anything get to us and doing it at home, in front of our fans, in this environment, it’s awesome.

Taft last won a baseball city title in 1964… and ended that drought when it took on Whitney Young in the city championship game May 21 at Wrigley Field. 

Thanks to a magnificent start by pitcher Carlos Gonzalez, the Eagles took down the Dolphins 5-1 to bring the championship plaque back to Taft and equal what TAFT SOFTBALL had done a mere week-and-a-half prior. 

“The adrenaline that you feel when you pitch in a game like that, all the people in the stands supporting me…I know my parents were there, I know my friends were there supporting me,” Gonzalez said. “So that gave me the energy to pitch today.

“I always pitch with my heart, always that energy.”

Those three doubles pairings carried Young to the 2026 CPL Boys Varsity Tennis Championship on Friday, May 15. In the process, the Dolphins ended Lane’s reign at Riis Park, denying the Champions a fourth straight city title.

It was a testament to Young’s depth, said Peterson, a sophomore who earned redemption by winning No. 1 doubles after falling in last year’s No. 2 doubles final.

“It took an effort from each and every one of these players, not just today but all season long,” Dolphins coach Carl Abram said.

“Enduring all the rainouts, cold-weather practices – it just really builds team camaraderie. There’s a real team element with these guys. They all work really well together, and I think that’s been our biggest hurdle in the past.”

Lane boys LAX is building its dynasty. 

A year after defeating Young for the second consecutive season in the city title game, the defending champions were looking for a three-peat against Lincoln Park, which had taken down the Dolphins in the semifinals, becoming the first school other than Lane or Young to make it to the city title game in at least three years 

“It’s fantastic to do it again,” Lane’s Ian Donohoe said. “We lost my freshman year and that one stung. That one stung.

“We worked all year for this game and just showing how we were able to dominate this game, it shows how far we’ve come this season.”
