Forty! In 40 years, I’ve learned that life is not a bystander event. I’m the one in the driver’s seat. The steering wheel, gas pedal and brake are all mine to use at will.
Everything worth keeping takes time and consistency. It’s good to keep your head down and work but equally important to look up and make sure you’re still going in the right direction. If you don’t, you might get lost.
God tests us to see if we show up. Game on or game over. Each trial taught me that I am so much stronger than I ever would have given myself credit for. What a gift.
Friendships are non-negotiable. They are a crucial part of your evolution. Good friends will challenge you, celebrate you, hold you accountable and support you without any expectation of reciprocation. Your friends are a direct reflection of you.
In an opera, action happens in the recit, not the aria. (Look it up😉). Small daily practices outweigh large sweeping gestures every time. A morning kiss. An after-school hug. Flowers just because. 15 uninterrupted minutes. A lunchbox note. These are the moments that define a life well-lived.
Love is not only a feeling, but the summation of: passion, joy, kindness, patience, mutual respect, assumption of good will, frustration, anger, forgiveness, unwavering trust and commitment, peace, fulfillment, insane fun and above all, a daily choice. I have loved and been loved so deeply, I almost can’t believe it.
I’m looking back on the last decade and skipping into the next one with my beautiful family who I love more than I could ever explain, the dearest friends who are like family, dreams achieved and dreams I’m still reaching for.
So, if this is 40, let’s f***ing go.
