Anjali Mudra
You've seen this gesture and if you practice yoga, you probably do this often. But do you know the meaning of this gesture?
The Sanskrit word anjali stands for “to offer” or “to salute”, while Mudra means “seal.”
The anjali mudra connects the two sides of the body by uniting the hands. Some people see this as a symbol for the two poles of duality, prana and citta shakti, yin and yang, or our outer and inner selves. In all these symbols, when the hands come together, they create wholeness.
Benefits of Anjali Mudra
- Improves concentration
- Helps in grounding ourselves
- Connects us to the five elements (air, water, fire, ether, earth)
- Brings awareness to our intention
- Unifies the right and left-brain hemisphere
- When used in posture, meditation, and pranayama practices, it can deepen the connection creating a calm relaxing sensation
How to practice Anjali Mudra?
Bring the hands to touch at hearts center, fingers gentling pressing together creating a small space in between the palms, heels or the hands pressing together.
This can be done seated, standing, even while in posture. Close the eyes and take a few deep breaths while holding the mudra.
Give it a try and let us know in the comments what your favorite mudra is. :)
