At least 14 of these were families on vacation. In Wisconsin we might not have a pool in every backyard, but we do have lakes, rivers and ponds. Not to mention how many of us travel to warm destinations. Survival swim lessons add another layer of protection.

Can you spot the swimmer?
Who can spot the 6 year old swimmer? Hint, she's wearing a Neon pink, blue and green 1 piece swim suit and is less than 1 foot under water in all pictures. No kids hurt in this PSA.

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children under 5 years old.
On average there are 22 non fatal drownings per day in the US.
Learning to swim can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent for 1 to four-year-olds who take formal swim lessons.
Children as young as 6 months old can learn to self rescue with ISR.
**WATER RESCUE**
On Wednesday, September 1st, Eau Claire Police and Eau Claire Fire were called to the Ferry Street boat landing regarding a missing 2-year-old child. Upon arrival, officers located the child who had been removed from the water by an adult. The child was unresponsive and was not breathing. Officers performed CPR on the child who was then transported to a local hospital by EMS. The Eau Claire Fire Department continued life saving efforts during the transport. The child is listed in stable condition. This incident is still under investigation. We will provide more information when it becomes available.

Everyone needs to practice their float!
Members of RRFR this week are undergoing special training to develop the skills necessary to save themselves should they ever find themselves submerged in water while in full gear. This particular training is a first for the department. While it may seem unusual, we had this exact situation play out in recent years when one of our members fell into a swimming pool inside a home while searching in blackout conditions.
