A Hard Lesson in Self-Defense Law

A man in Memphis is facing voluntary manslaughter charges after admitting he shot a burglary suspect who was running away from his apartment.

This case is a sobering reminder for armed citizens:
👉 Self-defense does not mean pursuit.

Deadly force is generally justified only to stop an immediate threat of death or serious bodily harm. Once a suspect turns and flees, that threat usually ends. At that moment, pulling the trigger can turn a lawful defensive act into a criminal one, even if the encounter started inside your home.

There’s also the safety reality. Shooting at a fleeing person in low light, in an apartment complex, puts innocent neighbors at risk. Missed rounds don’t disappear. They land somewhere.

Good training teaches this:
• Stop the threat
• Break contact
• Get to safety
• Call 911
• Be a good witness

Not to chase. Not to punish. Not to “make sure they don’t get away.”

This case is exactly why concealed carry education must include when to stop shooting, not just how to shoot.
