Gymies STRONG is living up to its name!

A few week in on the new program & already seeing great outcomes:

Participants are feeling stronger, building stamina, moving with greater intention and noticing everyday wins, from climbing stairs more easily to living with less pain. Coach Shannon has also seen tremendous improvement in their technique and mind-muscle connection.

But one of the best results has been the bond they’ve formed. They set up together, clean up together and encourage one another every step of the way. Stronger bodies, stronger confidence and a stronger community! 💪🏽

There is still time to register for the new Gymies STRONG program - but not much! Monday is the last day. 💪🏽

TRAINER TIP TUESDAY 💪

That’s me in 1991, not long after we opened Gymies. I was 22, loved the results I was getting, and wanted to be as strong as I looked!

Back then, I naturally rested 3–4 minutes between sets. I’d complete a hard set, recover, and then perform another quality set. I wasn’t concerned about keeping my heart rate elevated during strength training.

Later, I experimented with shorter rest periods and constantly moving. But after more than 36 years of training people, I’ve come back to something my 22-year-old self understood:

Give yourself enough time between sets to RECOVER!

For most members and clients, I recommend starting with 90–120 seconds. Heavy squats or deadlifts may require more; smaller exercises may require less.

Rest too little, and fatigue can compromise your next set. Rest too long, and a 45-minute workout can quickly become 90 minutes!

The goal is simple: recover enough to perform another quality set and then get back to work.

And perhaps the bigger Trainer Tip is this: Never stop learning.

I’ve changed how I train, and how I train others, as I’ve gained experience and continued my education. Sometimes I’ve even discovered that something I did decades ago wasn’t so bad after all!

Train hard. Train smart. Keep learning.

Strength gives people freedom!

TRAINER TIP TUESDAY

Stop waiting to feel motivated.

Motivation is great when it shows up. But it’s also unreliable.

Some days you’ll walk into the gym ready to go. Other days, you’ll have a hundred reasons why tomorrow sounds better.

That’s where consistency matters more than motivation.

You don’t brush your teeth because you woke up feeling inspired to do it. You do it because it’s part of taking care of yourself. Training can become the same way.

You don’t need every session to be your best. You don’t need to set a personal record. You don’t even need to feel excited about being there.

You just need to keep the appointment you made with yourself.

And here’s the funny thing: motivation often shows up after you get started.

So on the days you don’t feel like training, don’t wait for motivation.

Show up. Start moving. Practice.

Consistency will take you places motivation never could.

It’s time for our TRAINER TIP TUESDAY!

Don’t workout. Practice!

Since earning my StrongFirst SFG-1 and adopting the StrongFirst approach to training, I’ve stopped thinking of my time in the gym as a “workout.” Instead, I call it practice.

Think about it: golfers practice. Musicians practice. Athletes practice their sport. So why should strength be any different?

When I practice, I’m not just trying to burn calories, get sweaty, or wear myself out. I’m trying to get better at something.

I’m practicing my kettlebell swing and front squat. I’m practicing creating tension, controlling my breathing, generating force, and moving with better technique.

That shift changes the question from, “Did I work hard enough today?” to “Did I get better today?”

That doesn’t mean practice is easy or that we don’t work hard. It means the goal isn’t exhaustion. The goal is quality repetitions that build skill and strength while leaving you ready to come back and practice again.

Strength is a skill, and skills are practiced.

So the next time you come into Gymies, don’t just “get your workout in.”

PRACTICE!
