Welcome (fàilte)! Things have been busy around here, so please allow us to reintroduce ourselves.

Cincinnati Highland Dancers is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the traditions and culture of Scottish Highland Dancing in Cincinnati, OH.

Cincinnati Highland Dancers was founded in 1991 and is led by teachers qualified through the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD) and the Royal Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (RSOBHD).

In addition to competing in local, regional, national and world competitions, dancers enjoy performing throughout the year for the community. Our performances consist of demonstrations of historical dances in traditional attire.

Here at our studio, we celebrate the diversity of our staff, students, and community. We believe that anyone should be able to participate and enjoy Scottish Highland Dancing. We are committed to making our programs available and accessible to all interested students.

Happy Appalachian Festival Day!

05/08/2024

Join us this weekend for TWO public performances at the Appalachian Festival at Coney Island!

We will be dancing on the Dance Stage on Sunday from 10am - 11am and again from 2:30pm - 3pm.

We love performing at the Appalachian Festival, not just because we can share our love of dance, but we can also share the stories and history of the Scots that settled in the Appalachian mountain region!

Cincinnati Highland Dancers' was founded and holds some of our classes in Clermont County- the western-most Appalachian county in Ohio. Although we may be on the "edge of Appalachia," we still feel the cultural, historical, and economic impacts in our community.

We also take pause to acknowledge, especially as we share the weekend with other folk from this region, that we are, and will be, dancing on stollen land historically under the stewardship of the Hopewell, Adena, Myaamia, Shawandasse Tula, Lenapé, and Wazhazhe Manzhan peoples, and is still home to a diverse group of indigenous peoples who have been unfairly and disproportionately affected by the systemic, intentional, and often times violent colonialism many of us continue to benefit from today.

Our Story

CHD is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping Highland Dancers gain confidence, self-esteem, cultural awareness and diversity in their community and promoting a wholesome, morally upstanding environment for young dancers to develop good character and become well rounded adults.

Scottish Highland Dancing is a celebration of the Scottish spirit. The dances are a spectacular combination of strength, agility, movement, music, and costume. Unlike other dance mediums, Highland dances are generally danced solo and in competition. Dancers typically dance to traditional Scottish music such as Strathspeys, Reels, Hornpipes and Jigs all played by an accompanying bagpiper. The dances are made up of different parts, called steps and there are usually four or six steps to a dance. The dances are great fun and anyone, not just those with a Scottish heritage, who thrills to the sound of the bagpipe can join in and learn the dances. Highland dancing was traditionally performed by men but is now performed by men and women. It is one of few arenas where men and women compete equally. In most competitions, the number of women competing far exceeds the number of men.

Highland Dancing is a healthy workout for adults and for children. It is a great way to develop good coordination, posture and overall muscle tone, not to mention aerobic capacity and strength. One study showed that a half hour of dance was equal to a game of soccer.

All our instructors have credentials through the British Association of Teachers of Dancing.
Louise Reid - Fellow Member BATD, Member of the SOBHD Adjudicator’s Panel
Melissa Volck - Fellow Member BATD
Morgan Woodring - Member BATD
Shelby Matthews - Member BATD

In addition to competing in local, regional, national and world competitions, the dancers of CHD enjoy performing throughout the year for the community. Our group brings in world renowned instructors (at a discount to member dancers) to provide workshops for our dancers and other dancers in the area. This is a great opportunity for our dancers to learn from other instructors and improve their skills. Dancers are also encouraged to attend outside workshops and camps held throughout our region.

All donations to our group are tax-deductible.
