Naturally occuring trans fats are found in small quantities in animal products such as milk and meat products. Artificial trans fats on the other hand are created in an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid. This is commonly seen as "partially hydrogenated oils" on ingredients lists. Trans fats like this are most commonly found in fried foods like donuts, and baked goods like cookies, cakes, and biscuits.

The main difference between omega 3 and omega 6 is in where the double bond, (or point of unsaturation). Both are essential, healthy fats that should be incorporated into your diet.

The primary difference between saturated and unsaturated fats is its chemical structure. Saturated fats don't contain any double bonds, while unsaturated fats contain at least one or more double bonds. Saturated fats were previously considered to be "artery clogging" and detrimental to heart health, however recent research has shown that moderate amounts of saturated fat may not carry any significant health risk in healthy individuals. Unsaturated fats are further classified into Monounsaturated fats (has only one double bond) and polyunsaturated fats (has multiple double bonds). I will be further breaking down mono and polyunsaturated fats later this week, stay tuned!

Recommended daily amount of dietary fat is 20%-35% for most healthy individuals. Fat gets a bad reputation because it's is generally something we all try to avoid but the truth is, healthy fats are an essential part to any healthy diet. Over the next few days, I will be breaking down the different types of fats, what they do for your body and good sources of each!
