Almost every kid starts out a little unsure about swim lessons. Some cry. Some resist. Some just don’t like it at first.

But I can also tell you that almost every kid I teach learns to feel more confident, respect the water, build important safety skills… and eventually, actually LOVES the water. 🤍

The beginning doesn’t always look like the ending.
Sometimes it’s just part of the process. 🥹

We are over here learning life saving skills. Zoey sometimes hated lessons but we got it done! Another layer of protection she will take everywhere she goes.

Never leave your child alone in the bathtub.

Not for 5 min, not for 5 seconds.

From ages 1-4 it’s the leading cause of death.
From ages 5-14 drowning is the second leading cause.

And for children under 5, most fatal drowning happen inside their home (tub/pool)

It can happen in seconds.
And it’s silent.

So the next time you think, “I’ll just go do this really quick” thinking youll hear them, fall or slip…
You won’t.

Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub.
No matter how long you’ll be sitting on that toilet seat.

🚨 UNPOPULAR OPINION: GET OUT OF THE CHAIR AND GET IN THE POOL. 🚨

I get asked all the time…

“What should I put on my child in the pool?”

My answer?

YOU.

Not a puddle jumper.
Not a floatie.
Not a life jacket when you’re right there supervising in the pool.

This picture is a perfect example of what I mean.

Dad is IN THE WATER.
Dad is WITHIN ARM’S REACH.
Dad is PAYING ATTENTION.
And she has something nearby to rest on when she needs it.

Because here’s the truth…

A puddle jumper is not a babysitter.
A flotation device is not supervision.
And watching your child from across the pool is not the same as being close enough to reach them immediately.

your job is to be close enough to save them—not close enough to watch something happen.

Yes, life jackets absolutely have a place. But when it comes to pool time, stop looking for something to put on your child that will replace what needs to be happening around your child.

Get in. Stay close. Pay attention.

Your hair can get wet. Your phone can wait.

Your child cannot afford for you to be distracted.

Child: I can swim and float. I wanna swim too.
Me: Ok, get in and show me.
Child steps down into water.

I cannot assist the child into a float and they definitely cannot swim.

What’s the issue here?
Children like this one actually believe they can swim. They have no fear entering water. They cannot understand that it’s the floaties or puddle jumper keeping their head above water and helping them « swim and float ».

That’s why floaties are so dangerous. It’s easy to have a pool day when you are watching them play in water with it on. You don’t have to hold them. It’s dangerous and frankly deadly because the child might get back in without the floatie and quickly drown.
