I had never heard of a carabiner until the day a friend took me rappelling for the first time. I was terrified out of my mind and exhilarated at the same time. I quickly moved on from rappelling to rock climbing. Though I would never claim to have been great at the sport, I found a kind of peace out on a rock wall that was difficult to find in my everyday life.

Our children now climb, hike and camp with us. I can't help but feel that it is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children in this digital age, the ability to disconnect from the busy and the instant and reconnect with each other. To give them the ability to enjoy the wonder, beauty and peacefulness of time spent out doors.

That first introduction to rappelling and rock climbing took place nearly 20 years ago. I've seen carabiners become an everyday item. Small ones on key chains because they are so useful.
