Remember Clay City Raceway

OK friends with extensive collections of Mid-American Auto Racing News, I'm back trying to reconstruct Clay City Raceway (round track) history. I'm on 1975 and the first race I show results for in my notes is July 11, 1975, won by Floyd Gilbert. I'm uncertain if there were any earlier races that year. That was when Dale Napper, Ronnie Roundtree and Jim Swafford first ran the track, after it was closed for two seasons. I'm also searching for a full top 10 rundown from Sept. 12, 1975. Mine only goes to seventh - Gene Petro. All assistance is appreciated.

I am so sorry. Just seeing this. Our thoughts and prayers for the family. Mr. Roe was a big part of Clay City Raceway for many years.

View Robert Lynn Roe's obituary, send flowers, find service dates, and sign the guestbook.

Question 5. Does anyone have copies of early race results from Clay City Raceway - 1972 and earlier?

I am currently trying to document early results through 1972 - don't ask its an obsession.

I have found most of the low-hanging fruit through searching my stash (which is limited) of Mid-American Racing News, online on newspapers.com and reviewing some of Jim Crump's early notes, courtesy of son Randy.

Trying to document this stuff, if anyone has a scrapbook hidden away.

Thank you in advance.

Questions 2-4. I am told there was a Clay City Raceway souvenir program around 1968 or 1969. Anyone have one? Anyone else seen one? Anyone want to sell one?

First question. Does anyone know for certain when Clay City Raceway opened? Drag strip opened in 1963. History of America's Speedways says round track opened in 1964 but multiple people now tell me that is wrong.

Maybe 1966 or 1967?

Congratulations to living legends Vern LeFevers and Chuck McWilliams on your pending induction into the Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame. Ceremony will be in November in Central City.

Shared to honor the self-described “tall, skinny yankee,” legendary dirt superstar Larry Moore who took his final checkered flag on Thursday. One of the best ever, I still remember him winning at Clay City in the Don Thompson #27 Monte Carlo. He wrote about that in his book “On Top of the World.”
Rest in peace.

I just uncovered some 1968 Clay City race results by complete accident. This was when CCR ran NASCAR modified points.

July 14, 1968 - Carl Stone won 30-lap feature
July 21, 1968 - Carl Stone (1966 Chevelle) won 30-lap feature, JC Stone (68 Chevelle) was second and Rocky Arnette (Chevelle) third
Sept. 22, 1968 - Ralph Latham won a 33-lap feature (probably Ruth Motors Chevelle)
Sept. 29, 1968 - Armon Smith (Buddy Crouch Plymouth) won a 30-lap feature with Ralph Latham second and Joe Burdette third
Oct. 13, 1968 - Ralph Latham won 30-lap feature, with Armon Smith second and Bill Kimmel third(says 55 Chevy but pretty sure it was a 55 Ford with Chevy power).

We already knew Carl Stone was the track and Kentucky NASCAR points champion in 1968
