🎡Getting off “The Merry Go Round of….I’m Sorry”

We have heard many couples tell us, “I said I was sorry, but they won’t let it go. Why do they keep throwing it back in my face?”

I’m sure many of you have experienced the “I’m Sorry” either said sincerely or not. While the other person receiving it stands there with their arms folded, possibly giving the eye roll 🙄 (either internally or externally) and the words “Fine” coming out of their mouth. Or, they walk away saying, “Whatever or uh-huh.” Unfortunately when this happens, these conversations and/or fights continue to be had over and over again.

But, you may be asking:
👉 Why was sorry not good enough? 🤔
👉 Why can’t they let it go?🤔

Don’t feel bad, you’re not alone, we asked the same questions. John and I spent years caught on this ‘Merry Go Round,’ never understanding why we weren’t making progress.

Here are three things we learned:

1️⃣ The words, “I’m sorry,” are said by many of us as a blanket statement (either out of guilt or obligation) that tends to hold no weight of sincerity. And if you were sincere 👇🏼

2️⃣ The words “I’m Sorry” do show the other person any depth of understanding or validation. 🤯

3️⃣ No where in the Bible does it say to tell someone “I’m sorry.” 🤔 It says to confess and ask for forgiveness. Big difference!

These three insights, plus the three step apology we learned, transformed our marriage. And not just our marriage, we have taught and used these principles with our kids. I don’t know about you, but we are not perfect parents (shocker… I know! 😱), so we ensure we demonstrate this to them and vice a versa.
