On Meditating, Sort Of, by Mary Oliver

Meditation, so I’ve heard, is best accomplished
if you entertain a certain strict posture.
Frankly, I prefer just to lounge under a tree.
So why should I think I could ever be successful?

Some days I fall asleep, or land in that
even better place — half asleep — where the world, spring, summer, autumn, winter —
flies through my mind in its hardy ascent and its uncompromising descent.

So I just lie like that, while distance and time
reveal their true attitudes: they never
heard of me, and never will, or ever need to.

Of course I wake up finally
thinking, how wonderful to be who I am,
made out of earth and water,
my own thoughts, my own fingerprints —
all that glorious, temporary stuff.

Hear me out 🙉 but boat pose is a really naff choice if you want to strengthen your abdominals 🛶 

The word ‘CORE’ is used so often in yoga but it actually spans such a huge range of muscles and muscle groups. It does NOT mean ‘your abs’. 

Boat pose is a great strength pose - but is predominantly targeting your hip flexors. Which is great! Strong hip flexors are fabulous and are actually a core muscle! 🤓 But if you’re doing endless boat poses because you know your abdominals could benefit from some extra strength... well your time could be better spent else where.

Half boat for example! Bit of stupid name if you ask me because there’s nothing half about it 😳 It’s also known as a hollowbody in the fitness world.

Half/low boat is going to REALLY challenge your abdominals - it’s so hard!! So swipe across for some different variations to practice to ensure you can maintain good form - your lower back should be squished against the mat or at least only millimetres away 👌🏼

plant more gardens,
sing more songs,
resist oppressive systems,
teach our children well,
learn from people who think differently than us,
take care of our elders,
speak kindly to one another,
protect this wild, wild earth,
build collective solutions...
study the seasons...
learn from our ancestors...
Make more art.

This work will not end in an election.

It will not end with an icon.

It is a lifetime of effort.

It is a long haul.

When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
