Clearwater Lawn Bowling Club

Hello everyone! It's almost November, and that means it's tournament season. The Clearwater Lawn Bowls Club is thrilled to be hosting 6 tournaments this season including a singles tournament in March 2023. We have been busy here working on the greens, boards, and facilities with the aim of providing our members, and guests with a fantastic bowls experience! Look for tournament details on our website soon.

We are also very excited to announce that we will be offering night bowling under our lights starting in November! We will be open to the public, and welcome bowlers of all abilities. We love teaching new bowlers this fun sport! No experience? No problem! No bowls? Use ours!

Our current hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM, and Sunday 1 PM - 3:30 PM. Sunday's are perfect family days. We have junior bowls, and encourage you to bring your kids. ( junior bowls are size appropriate for 8-12 year olds). Sunday's are free, include the use of bowls and lessons!

We are currently working with the great city of Clearwater to finalize our night bowling hours. An official announcement with details coming soon!

Due to some unplanned sprinkler system maintenance, Sunday bowling for today 8/14 will be canceled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We will return to our regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday 8/16 @ 9am. We hope to see you soon!

When you get a message from last week's new players that they are returning, and bringing more first time players with them, it makes all the hard work so worthwhile!

We are thrilled to host, and teach new players! Everyone is welcome at the CLBC! We can get you, and your party "on line" to bowling some great shots in an afternoon. If you decide lawn bowling is something you're interested in we will continue to give you lessons, and insights for free until you're so good that you're teaching us!

Delighted to have had SIX new players come out to the club yesterday for lessons, and a triples match! That's 12 in two weeks, and 15 over the last couple months!

A great time was had by all. Sadly the weather didn't allow us to get in our typical 14 ends, but the ends we did get in saw some excellent shots, and enthusiastic play.

The afternoon started with a quick talk about game play, the mat, the jack, etc. Followed by a simple lesson on grip, stance, line, and delivery. Our approach... It's all about being comfortable, and fluid. Keeping it simple, and fun while kindly advising before, and after each individual's shots on the first couple ends. With this approach we have seen many new players pick up the game quickly. Grip, stance, line, and delivery! Weight comes with time, and can be worked in with each bowl once line is consistent.

It's a challenging game, but that doesn't mean it can't be picked up in a day to the point where a family or group can have fun! A bit of direction, some positive encouragement, and focus on successes will have your new bowlers hooked, and wanting to play more.

The Clearwater Lawn Bowls Club will always have time for new bowlers! We will do our best to help you learn this fun game regardless of your age and athletic abiltiy.

New bowlers play FREE for the first month, which includes lessons, and use of our bowls! Come out, and play!

Since I began playing bowls, I have looked to the teaching, and game play of David Bryant for instruction, inspiration, strategy, and quite often grounding.

I'd like to share this excerpt from the book Bryant On Bowls that I read every now, and then to remind myself not to take things so seriously, and to afford myself the luxury of a friendly roll-up, as Bryant calls them, amongst friends.

On friendly roll-ups at the club... "They are all that the majority of bowlers desire, and even the best players should let their hair down sometimes. Whether one is only aiming to beat a friend for a pint or striving with all at one's command for the highest honours in the game, it must always be remembered that bowls offers wonderful relaxation and comradeship, qualities far too precious to be sacrificed at the altar of competitive enthusiasm" - David Bryant

Thanks everyone for the kind support on our last post!

Here's an update - I was delighted to have the opportunity to spend this afternoon teaching the Rodenburg family how to play bowls! I met them at the First Friday event I mentioned in my last post, and they came out today to give it a roll. Naturals, every one of them! A highlight of the afternoon was being able to work with two junior bowlers. When I include my own, we now have 4 bowlers ages 12 to 17, and anticipate another next weekend. Hopefully we can establish a junior and/or family Sunday league for the fall!

We learned a bit about the game, the scoring, and game types, but spent most of our time focusing on grip, stance, and delivery. I'm not sure who had more fun. By the time we finished there were quite a few bowls stopping around the jack, and a few touchers!

Really looking forward to playing with them again, and continuing to promote the sport!

Set up a table yesterday evening for the Tarpon Springs First Friday event. Every first Friday of the month the city closes down Tarpon Ave in the downtown area allowing food trucks, and vendors to line the streets. We had great time speaking to people about lawn bowling! Our set up included various sizes of bowls, our cool flyers, and some bowling highlights playing on the tele!

Thanks to everyone that stopped by for a chat. I personally spoke with more than 30 individuals, and groups, including some very enthusiastic juniors about playing bowls at our fantastic facility! We hope to see you all soon!
