Chessable - Where Science Meets Chess 05/22/2024

Chessable just got better!

Four years ago, I made a suggestion/request to Chessable.com to add something like folders to help organize purchased and free courses on the site.

https://www.chessable.com/discussion/thread/198802/a-better-way-to-organize-courses/

With lots of support from the community, it has finally happened! When you get a chance, check out your course listings to see how you can organize them. Patience has its rewards!

Chessable - Where Science Meets Chess #1 science-backed chess training app to study openings, tactics, strategy and endgames. Learning chess from top players and coaches made easier. Register 100% free today.

Stockfish FAQ 04/07/2023

Stockfish 15.1- a +1 no longer means the equivalent of "a pawn up".

Below is a link the the discussion from Stockfish.org which explains the change in what the evaluation numbers mean.

For those interested but too lazy to read, here's a shorthand: A +1 eval means White is expected to win from the current position 50% of the time. A +2 roughly means that White should win from the position 100% of the time. A 0.00 means that it is even and (this is important) almost certainly would result in an actual draw.

Here's the link: https://github.com/official-stockfish/Stockfish/wiki/Stockfish-FAQ -of-the-stockfish-evaluation

Tim has updated the Ladder rules- they now allow for time controls slower than G/15 with a 10s increment, as long as both players agree. I myself (Paul) am happy to entertain a G/30 time control if it will increase challenges, and I am open to other options with advance notice.

CLERMONT Chess Club

Ladder Rules

1. Ladder games are played with a clock at a time control of:
* Rapid ladder: minimum suggested time control is game in 15 minutes with a 10 second increment (G/15+10), but longer time controls are acceptable as long as both players agree
* Blitz ladder: suggested time control is game in 5 minutes with no increment (G/5), but other blitz time controls are acceptable as long as both players agree

2. Rapid ladder games are played as a single game. Blitz ladder games are played as a best-of-five series.

3. Colors shall be determined randomly. For blitz series, after the first game, players alternate colors.

4. Standings changes:
* If the lower-ranked player wins the game or series, the lower-ranked player takes the higher-ranked player’s spot on the ladder, and the higher-ranked player moves down one spot.
* If the higher-ranked player wins the game or series, there is no change in either players’ ladder rankings.
* If the game or series ends in a draw, the lower-ranked player takes the spot just below the higher-ranked player.

5. It is suggested that a ladder player may challenge anyone who is one, two, or three spots above them on the ladder, but other challenges can proceed if both players agree to the match.

6. No player shall be obligated to play more than one ladder game/series per club session, but a player may play multiple ladder game/series in a session if all parties agree.

7. If a participant repeatedly does not make themselves available for ladder games, the participant may be moved down the ladder.

8. Have fun!

ChessRegister - Event Registration 01/01/2023

The Central Florida Chess Club Winter Open is coming up soon. All the cool players will be there! As soon as I get my work schedule squared away, I will sign up myself!

Note that the base time control of 90 minutes is shorter, but each move of the regular time control has a 30 SECOND DELAY.

That's right, 30 seconds. If you lose on time, you were probably losing anyway...

If you are serious about chess AT ALL, it's hard to pass this up!

This entire series is excellent.

The Winning Academy 15: How to avoid blunders (part 1) Every chess player blunders. Even the brains of the very best in the world sometime take a day off. We are humans, and errors are an inherent part of human nature. And yet, few things in chess are as discouraging as losing a good game after a silly mistake. Hi all- Tim Bottorff has created a simple, workable proposal for a club ladder, and we plan to start it up this Thursday! If you are interested, stop on by! With club time constraints, we are starting with a Game/15 minutes with a 10 second increment to start, and we may add a blitz ladder if there is demand.
