The last thing I told him was to go defend our country and that I was going home to cut my grass.

I meant it! I went home, took my uniform off and put it back in the closet. I then put on my yard shorts and groomed my fairway lawn.

And I appreciate him for securing my peace of mind and freedom while I do it.

He hasn’t stood a watch yet. He hasn’t even put the uniform on yet. But he has raised his right hand and sworn to defend our constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That’s enough for me.

He is now part of the world’s greatest fighting force ever assembled. Without him and those he will serve beside, none of us could sleep or cut our grass without worry.

To all of those serving or have served…

Some days are better than others. I was feeling amazing today and then…

THIS!!!

I don’t have a bunch of progress photos on my website or in my profile. I believe that an individual’s success is their own. I’m just the coach and cheering section.

But this. This is mine! It’s why I do what I do. It’s my reward for service. I wish i could bottle this feeling and take a drink when im feeling down. Today I’ll take the win!!!

I’ll say it again. Find your “why” and pursue it without apologies.

An intangible benefit in the personal training profession that I find priceless:

Connection through conversations.

Today’s byproduct is advice that we can all use.

We all face storms in our lives. No matter your status financially or socially, challenge is part of life.

Understanding that they are difficult but sometimes necessary to grow is the first step in moving on after the storm.

Thought and Purpose:

“Until thought is linked with purpose, there is no intelligent accomplishment. With the majority, the ship of thought is set to “drift” upon the ocean of life. Aimlessness is a vice, and such drifting must not continue for those who would steer clear of catastrophe and destruction.”

James Allen wrote those words in “As a Man Thinketh” over 100 years ago. They ring true today. Social media, the news, Hollywood and gaming will set you adrift regularly if you allow it.

I never found use for self improvement books. Always thought they read like Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War.” Every passage seemed obvious but I never knew how to put them into practice in a practical way.

Until this passage. How do I actually change the way I think? By what I do. It’s not one and then the other. It’s both! Got an issue with how you are thinking? Then change what you are doing! Trying to change mindset? Then get to work—literally! Move your body!!!

I have been successful by accident. My mind is always my obstacle. My discipline and motivation is my secret weapon. I just move and act and good things happen. My mindset changed as I moved.

Try it. Move toward your goals every day. Do one thing and don’t allow laziness to strike you down—no matter what! You will be amazed at how your mind and body feed into each other.

Prepping to ship in four weeks. Ran him through an old version of the Navy’s beating/smoke session. He says he is glad he is joining the Army! Honestly, they are lucky to be getting him!

He has left the 400’s and 300’s behind him since we started working out together almost two years ago. Officially lost 117 pounds as of today!!!

I’m an idealist. I don’t believe leaders wake up with an intent to ruin lives. Most leaders work towards what’s best for their people and the organization—even though not always in that order. Through mentorship, guidance and example, they make a difference in lives and grow future leaders.

I’m also smart enough to understand realistically that people can be selfish and make decisions that are beneficial to themselves and their careers. Meaning they can have tendencies to walk on those they lead through micromanagement, indifference and poor communication.

Service to others is the greatest calling and most rewarding thing we can ever do in our lives. Leadership is an amazing responsibility that can never be taken for granted. It has the power to change lives—for better or worse.

How do you carry the wonderful and terrible title of a leader in your organization? How will you be remembered by those you serve?

Like so many others, leaving the military left me searching for purpose. I found it in helping people pursue health and fitness goals. Messages like this one fill my tank and keep me going.

Emotional intelligence.

This movie dialog has always been profoundly meaningful to me. 💪

The superheroes in comic books are powerful and failable. They may be able to do superhuman things but they are imperfect and have weaknesses—just like you and I.

The Hulk is my guy! Always angry and capable of great destruction but deep down, there is a someone who only wants to do good.

I’m smart enough to know that my passion can be perceived as a big green monster. That’s where my emotional intelligence should (doesn’t always) kick in. I get it and it’s a lifelong process.
