Doubt comes in a lot of forms. One form that is not discussed often is imposter syndrome. This is where you’re qualified and capable, but you still don’t believe you can match up with requirements at your given level. I’ve recently completed a contracting job that seemed huge. I spoke with my family members and mentors working up the mental compacity to break down the job into managable roles that I knew I was more than prepared to fulfill....

It’ss been a while since I’ve posted. There’s been a lot going on around here, and it’s mostly positive. My wife and I decided it was time to move to another house and we’ve been busy making this new place our own with accessibility features and upgrades. I’ve been continually going to JiuJitsu on a weekly basis so that i’m still staying sharp and not letting myself get away from something that brings me so much enjoyment....

This past week I got a rejection letter from a part-time job application. I had read somewhere that it’s a good practice to say thank you to employers even if they give you a letter of rejection, and I thought this was a little rediculous. No matter how nuts it sounded, I tried it. I’m not sure what the outcome will be, but at least I made a stronger impression....

This past week I surprised myself by really stepping out of my element. A scheduled meeting to discuss issues was planned and with everyone in attendance, no plan was in place on how the meeting was to proceed. I stepped up and acted as a facilitator to this meeting/group discussion, making sure topics were relavent and that all speakers kept on topic....

I was talking with someone this past week about personal values and creating a working philosophy around these values. It became apparent to the both of us that situations change, but values should not change. I thought of a music video that I watched when I was younger. The song was “Move Along” by All American Rejects. The music video had the singer standing still and everything around him was changing....

Today I finished listening to a book on Drive and Motivation. It spoke a great deal on research studies that tried to locate the single factor that influences what we do. A very fitting discussion for this blog. To summarize EyeRoll4, it’s a template: I do blank for blank. The one interesting takeaway I got from this book was that the addition of incentives sometimes takes away the feelings that normally are associated with work and tasks that are enjoyable....

I was speaking with a mentor this week, and he was affirming what one of my other mentors had been telling me, but it was how the point was presented that made it stand out. I have experience, even if it’s not exactly matched to a specific situation. I am adaptable because of my past. The past experiences that I’ve had are essentially stamped on me and those marks are what are going to propel me forward....

This past week I definitely stepped out of my comfort zone. I attended an in-person training for my leadership development program and then attended a leadership conference. I was gone for almost 7 days and I was very nervous leading up to the trip. It had been a long time since I had an independent travel experience. I’ve always had a little bit of sight and I’m cool with being the blind dude....

I will be attending a leadership training this week, so I spent the past couple of days re-reading the training materials. One concept that stood out this time around is the idea that leaders create safety in taking risks. One of the fundamental characteristics of a leader is their ability to challenge and promote change or development. With promoting change, one must experiment with what works and doesn’t work....

This past week after JiuJitsu training, talking with my wife about the idea of “Smack talk” helped me to examine the idea of an outlet. The idea of an outlet is giving yourself the opportunity to escape and channel your feelings towards something other than the routine activities that consume our everyday lives. For me JiuJitsu is considered an outlet, but I also have developed a light switch for myself as a result of the outlet....

This past week really was challenging for me at work. How my role was modified was where it was stressful. Things were not the norm and I understand that flexibility is required for any situation, but my ability to adapt was tested. Without getting into the odds and ins, I’ll say that keeping a steady calm mentality was definitely beneficial. I cannot direct my taught sense of level-headedness at one source, but it has particularly been of use lately....

This past week I took a risk and took a certification exam. I had been preparing for this test since the beginning of the year, but the test still left me feeling very uncertain. The results of the test will not be given to me until 6 weeks after the exam has been submitted. How do I continue moving towards my goals if I’m put on hold and don’t even know if I accomplished my short-term objective?...
