Due to my own training and preparation for the Olympic Trials in late April, I will just be doing private lessons at RTSC in Middleburg Heights this spring, for anyone that wants to develop in freestyle, Greco, or folkstyle. Direct message or email me for interest/availability for sessions.

Sunday reflection:
In wrestling, and life there are highs and lows. The state championship is the pinnacle of High School wrestling for Ohio. To make it to the tournament takes skill, toughness, and the ability to make adjustments in season. Ethan did just that. He made his first state championship. He wrestled well, but just came just short in two of his matches down in Columbus. Proud of him through it all.
As I reflect on my own career, I think about the days I competed at Ohio State. The highs and lows of chasing team championships as well as individual championships. It takes a team of men coming together with the same like mind in order to get one individual to the next level. And there are no guarantees. It is about learning, development, and moving forward. Even with some tough losses. The matches that typically stick out the most are the close ones that we come just short in.
But the key 🔑 to success is continuing to get back on the horse, and grow from it. Use some of the toughest losses as motivation to not quit, and to get back to the drawing board in order to learn. There will be more opportunities and more chances, as long as you are willing to keep working as hard as possible.
Most wrestlers don’t accomplish everything they set out to when they are younger, but they learn from each experience and use it to help them jump levels mentally, physically, and emotionally.
God is good. He has a plan for each person he creates. Trust the plan and keep doing all the right stuff each and every day!

Good luck to Ethan as he competes tomorrow and Saturday at districts in order to punch his ticket to the state championships next weekend! Ethan has been tremendous student and hard worker, he has put a lot of training in since the preseason. Proud of him!

Going to cover sit-outs this coming Sunday. This clip came from 2017 at the Big 10 finals. The biggest difference in the match was to keep wrestling from the bottom position, and create hip separation enough to get out before time expired. We will work on this specific position and the details of the technique. Understanding how to get out from bottom is a game changer!!

Thoughts on the NCAA finals match back in 2015. In this part of the match, I was winning by a few points in the third period. Going into a critical period where the WVU wrestler, Zeke Moisey, tried a mixer on top, he caught me for 2 seconds and I was able to fight off my back and get out, go back up by 2 points. At this point I knew he had the momentum and needed to get a takedown. I knew I needed to re-establish a couple point lead to finish the match off. I felt him pressure in and was ready for the counter shot to score the takedown to ice the match. The mental battle in the match is to stay in the moment, forget what just happened, and know what to do in the moment to gain the upper hand. The ability to focus takes discipline.

I’ll be running practices this fall at John Carroll University’s wrestling room on Sunday’s from 1pm-2:30pm, starting on September 3rd. Wrestlers with 2+ years of wrestling experience are eligible. I’ll be covering neutral, top, and bottom technique, and developing a greater understanding of each position, as well as a championship mindset leading up to the wrestling season.
