Would you pedal a bike without a chain?
I want you to imagine this for a second…
In front of you is a new beautiful bike frame, inflated road tires, and a comfortable seat set at the perfect height for a leisurely, comfortable ride.
You get on the bike, slowly push off, set your feet on the pedals and press down…
But nothing… There’s no forward progress?
Frantically, you start pedaling to gain some kind of traction…
But no matter how fast or hard you pedal, there’s no gain.
And that tiny push you started with is slowly fading...
Until you wobble, lose momentum, and have to get off.
This is exactly what happens when you pedal a bike without a chain.
(And is an excellent metaphor for fitness)
People have the fancy tools, all the hardware they need, and some understanding of how the bike works… But they’re missing the core piece that drives them forward.
All the parts working together.
The funny part is that Installing the “chain” is straightforward and actually pretty easy- just requires a bit of expertise to pick the right fit, function, etc.
I shared this post with our email list this morning and wanted to post it here because I'm curious... what's your burnout story?
For me, I trained 6-7 days per week for 1-2 hours per day religiously... and I had nothing to show for it other than shoulder MRIs and a BOATLOAD of frustration due to lack of progress. I only ate brown rice. I couldn't sleep and certain... body parts wouldn't work, lol. Overtrained and obsessed about the wrong stuff for around 10 months.
What about you?

Peak condition end of 2020!
"Practice what you preach"
Got a question for you. Would you trust an out of shape nutritionist?
Probably not.
A lot of people in fitness tend to preach more than they practice.
They get busy, lose their drive, focus on "the brand", etc and their results start slipping.
The same thing that got them there is slowly fading away.
If I were on the consumer side, I'd be slightly concerned.
How effective is their solution really?
They can't even stick to the thing they created...? Yikes!
I met one of my clients Ann in person before the 'Rona hit last year.
We were working on some Boulder shoulder exercises and watched a group fitness class doing some type of.... "fitness" that looked more like flopping around, lol.
This strange ritual was led by a character that had similar dimensions to the trainees (or devotees- I'm not sure what to call them).
Ann turns to me and whispers "at least I have a trainer that I want to look like!"
We laughed and had a moment.
Now Ann is a woman in her 40's, but I knew exactly what she meant.
It's leading by example.
That's the easy part about what I do. I don't need to go out of my way to put on an inauthentic show.
The simple exercises happen. I know how to eat to stay lean. I can eat a burger and not feel guilt or stress.
This is year round. I don't have to post the same photos from a 2015 Cancun trip with an "I'm getting back to this!!1" caption.
Yep, we know! Those 2 hours per day on the stepper machine are a totally realistic approach that lasted.
Anyway, let's wrap this up lol.
The bottom line is that a good role model is someone that leads by example.
Just food for thought the next time you're looking for solutions.
Learn exactly how to hit your goals on a consistent basis and understand why people stay stuck!

It's 100% up to you but deep down you know that the 65% lackluster encouragement would get under your skin
This is why coaching is essential!

This photo is at my peak "obsession" with fitness and was actually an important tipping point.
I had eaten nothing but "clean" food for about 10 months. And maintained 5-7% body fat. Exercised 6-7 days per week. Needed 6 advil a day to deal with my shoulder pain. Some mornings I would wake up and spit up blood. 🌶 stopped working too, lol.
I'd get anxiety around "bad food". I brought chicken and rice with me everywhere. I said "no' to social events. Relationships suffered. Then I'd cram in as much junk food as possible on "cheat days".
If I didn't have veins in my abs or quads, or the paper skin look I wasn't "disciplined" enough and beat myself up about it and reduce my intake greatly.
This is healthy, right?
Not quite.
I kept this up for around 10 months and after Thanksgiving 2013 I looked at my life and realized that that I had a completely f'd relationship with fitness and myself.
My passioned turned into an unhealthy addiction.
I followed arbitrary rules, which in hindsight were completely absurd.
I'd eat rice but I'd never eat bread?
Organic chips were fine, but God forbid I'd have doritos.
Pizza caused intense anxiety on every day other than Sunday.
???
I HAD to find another way.
And I did.
Once I realized that I could have "non ideal" foods and didn't need to train like a psychopath to keep results, I literally felt the fog lift.
Since then, I've never once felt anxiety or guilt around food or felt bad for having a day off of exercise.
And I've never let my fitness progress cut in to my personal life either.
I just needed to find a realistic and flexible approach.
If I knew that I could have kept my lean physique while having burgers and exercising less, I'd be like "where do I sign up!??!"
So if you can relate to any of these feelings, I encourage you to reach out and learn about our unique approach to fitness.
My goal is to demystify this entire mess of an industry and help people make fitness transformations that last a lifetime.
It's a few simlple adjustments and you'll start seeing progress week after week. It blew my mind once I figured this out.

"Fitness requires 24/7 discipline"
Yes, exactly.
Here I am with a vanilla custard protein shake and some banana bread.
Absolutely agonizing.
Poor me!
I know you're wondering... How do I manage to have such iron-clad willpower and discipline?
David Goggins once texted me and asked me the same thing.
Jk jk.
It's kind of funny because when I made this IG and made fitness blogs in 2015 I'd talk exclusively about meal prep, hard work, and discipline.
While yes, there's no substitute for hard work... The truth is that living like a psychopath isn't a realistic solution.
On top of that, no one wants to "diet" either.
People want to see results quickly, look their best, and bend the rules to have cheesecake without gaining weight.
Programs that require 24/7 work wonders... For around 4 weeks. Then it's 4 months off until we have to do it again.

The secret is balancing 3 things:
-Results
-Effort
-Happiness
And unfortunately you can't find that type of coaching and expertise at a Globogym or nutriMart.
This is exactly why we do what we do.
And why people that get exposed to our approach get breakthrough results and fix their relationships with food and training.
Could speak at length about this topic but that's it.
If you were at a superbowl and said "sorry still not eating bread" please get guidance.
Bread did nothing wrong.
