Front View Iron Swing of Tommy Fleetwood.

Topic’s: Still Head / Abbreviated Follow Thru

Tommy’s incredibly steady head during his iron swing and mainly his takeaway plus his unique, abbreviated follow through are two of the biggest reasons he is one of the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour. These traits combine to provide elite precision and repeatable impact, rather than chasing raw distance.

Why does Tommy keep his head silent during his takeaway:?

⬇️

Perfect Low Point Control: By keeping his head steady and centered, he maintains his spine angle and keeps his body stabilized. This ensures the club bottoms out at the exact same point in the turf every single time, producing crisp, ball first contact.

Reduces Variables: Keeping his head from swaying or dipping excessively means he doesn’t have to make compensations on the downswing to get back to the golf ball.

Why is Fleetwood’s short (abbreviated) follow through good?:

His finish looks unique, but it offers massive structural benefits:

⬇️

Prevents “Flipping” the Wrists: A long, wrapped-around-the-body finish often requires perfect timing, where the golfer’s hands flip at the bottom to square the clubface. Fleetwood’s short, low finish keeps his clubface square and stable through impact, which eliminates big misses especially to the left.

Keeps the Club In Front of the Body: In his swing, the club exits low and to the left rather than wrapping high around his neck. This move keeps the clubhead in front of his torso longer, preventing the club from getting too far “inside out” and promoting a reliable, piercing ball flight.

Controls Spin and Trajectory: An abbreviated follow-through is essentially a “knockdown” swing. It inherently keeps the ball lower in the wind and reduces backspin, which is vital for holding greens and controlling distance.

Born from Simplicity: Interestingly, Fleetwood’s short finish started as a practice drill given by his childhood coach to quiet down his lower body and stop the club from getting away from him. He found it so consistent that he integrated it permanently into his full swing.
