Pirates of the Desert - Port Clovis

Well Second Round Saturday has finally started and Maxwell's back ready for round 2. As long as God holds his angels tears back. (Rain).

Lets go play some golf down here at the Pirates of the Desert - Port Clovis.

Well the Girl Scouts came and took over Pirates of the Desert - Port Clovis for the day.

It was amazing and man did we learn alot on how to host events, nothing like trial by fire.

This was Port Clovis's first big event.

It went of without losing any oars or small children and we had a great Cookie of a Time.

We will back at Port Clovis in a little bit here as soon as we can find Maxwell.

The girls I think got him going on some crazy scent after a girl scout cookie.

Well Clovis, we will be open as soon as Maxwell's back to host us so it will probably be any minute.

We’ll be positioning the spool, laying out the six-seat gathering area, and beginning the build that will eventually become the meeting table for the six Pirates of the Desert™ characters.

At the End of the World, we’ll be positioning and beginning the big tavern bar using reclaimed materials and some of the 10 pallets we picked up for FREE today.

🏴‍☠️ CLOVIS, I NEED TO EXPLAIN WHAT PORT CLOVIS REALLY IS.

I think a lot of people still look at Port Clovis and see a miniature golf course.

And technically, yes — that is what sits here.

Eighteen holes.

Putters.

Golf balls.

Families coming through the gates.

But if that is all you see, then you are only seeing the foundation.

Because I am not trying to build an ordinary miniature golf course.

I AM TRYING TO BUILD SOMETHING FOR CLOVIS.

Something that lasts.

Something that becomes part of this town.

Something our kids grow up remembering.

Something local businesses can become part of.

Something families can bring their relatives to when they visit.

Something that creates traditions.

Something that creates landmarks.

Something that creates opportunities.

Something people from outside Clovis eventually hear about and decide they need to come experience for themselves.

And something that, years from now, people can look at and say:

“I WAS THERE WHEN THAT STARTED.”

That is the bigger vision.

And I know the way I am building it can look strange sometimes.

I move fast.

I change things.

I experiment.

I build something, look at it, decide it isn't good enough and sometimes build it again.

I come up with ideas that sound completely crazy when I first say them out loud.

And yes, I care about details that some people probably think are ridiculous.

I care whether a sign is straight.

I care how a hole looks.

I care about the characters.

I care about the stories.

I care about the businesses attached to Port Clovis.

I care about how people are treated here.

And I care about how all of these pieces eventually fit together.

There is a reason.

I AM NOT BUILDING PORT CLOVIS FOR NEXT WEEK.

I am trying to build something that can still matter years from now.

That means Port Clovis cannot simply be a place where somebody pays for miniature golf, plays 18 holes and leaves.

It has to become an experience.

A place where people have reasons to come back.

A place where different nights belong to different groups of people.

A place where something is happening.

And one of the most important pieces of the whole vision is this:

WE ARE NOT JUST BUILDING LEAGUES.
WE ARE BUILDING LANDMARKS AND TRADITIONS TO GO WITH THEM.

The landmark comes first.

Then the league follows.

That is intentional.

Take Hole 11.

We don't just announce a league called the Cannonball Cannabis Cup, print some flyers and start playing.

First, we build:

THE CANNONBALL HOLE.

Hole 11 becomes the physical landmark of that league.

And I don't want to quietly hire somebody to build it behind closed doors.

The BUILD itself becomes an event.

Teams.

Builders.

Businesses.

Sponsors.

Competition.

People from this community actually helping create part of Port Clovis.

Then, once that landmark exists, comes:

THE CANNONBALL CANNABIS CUP.

Now the league has a home.

It has an identity.

It has a story.

It has something permanent attached to it.

And years from now somebody can stand at Hole 11 and say:

“I REMEMBER WHEN THEY BUILT THAT.”

Or even better:

“I HELPED BUILD THAT.”

That is how an event becomes a tradition.

Then we do it again.

For the league built specifically for the everyday people of Clovis, we create:

THE SAND RUMMER BOAT.

A major permanent feature in the Trading Post area.

That boat becomes the official landmark of the people's league.

Then comes:

THE SANDRUMMERS CUP.

Friends.

Neighbors.

Families.

Coworkers.

Regular people.

You don't need to own a company.

You don't need to belong to a particular industry.

You just need to want to play, compete and become part of something.

Again:

BUILD THE LANDMARK.
CREATE THE STORY.
LAUNCH THE LEAGUE.
BUILD THE TRADITION.

That is the system.

These are not supposed to be random promotions that happen for a few weeks and disappear.

The physical pieces remain.

The stories remain.

The memories remain.

And then another layer gets added.

The same idea is behind the:

PORT CLOVIS COMMUNITY ART LEGACY MURAL.

That project isn't simply about making a wall prettier.

The vision is much bigger.

Students from Clovis help create something permanent.

Something they can look at years later.

Something they can someday show their own children.

And surrounding that project is a Port Clovis business sponsorship campaign with a goal of generating:

MORE THAN $5,000 FOR STUDENT ART SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE KIDS OF CLOVIS.

Think about that.

A student helps create something at Port Clovis.

Their artwork becomes part of the property.

Local businesses help support the project.

And that same project can help create scholarship opportunities for students.

Someday a kid who helped paint that mural could return as an adult...

stand in front of it with their own child...

point up...

and say:

“I DID THAT.”

That is not miniature golf.

THAT IS LEGACY.

And then there are ideas that sound absolutely crazy until somebody actually does them.

One of those ideas is our vision for:

24-HOUR FRANCHISE MOVIE MARATHONS.

Picture Friday night.

Around 9:00 PM, Port Clovis changes.

A gigantic wall that is more than 150 FEET LONG and 13 FEET HIGH becomes the movie screen.

Think about that scale.

More than 150 feet of wall.

With the proper public-performance licensing in place, imagine marathon experiences built around some of the biggest movie franchises people already love.

Star Wars.

Harry Potter.

Fast & Furious.

And other massive franchises.

But Port Clovis would not turn into a normal movie theater.

That's not the point.

Imagine playing miniature golf while the marathon is happening.

Pizza.

Soda.

Food.

Friends.

Families.

People walking around.

People hanging out.

Someone comes for one movie.

Someone stays for six hours.

Somebody leaves and comes back later.

And some completely insane person decides:

“I'M MAKING IT THROUGH THE WHOLE THING.”

😂

Friday night becomes Saturday morning.

Golf.

Movies.

Food.

Lights.

People.

An all-night and all-day experience.

You don't just come to watch something.

YOU COME TO BE PART OF SOMETHING.

That is the difference.

And eventually, I want the entire week at Port Clovis to have a rhythm.

I want people to look at the calendar and know:

“THAT'S MY NIGHT.”
MONDAY

Closed.

The property gets a break.

We repair.

We clean.

We build.

We prepare.

Because if Port Clovis is going to keep changing, we need time when the gates are closed so we can actually build the next thing.

TUESDAY

Volunteer Night.

People from Clovis helping physically create and improve Port Clovis.

Paint something.

Build something.

Repair something.

Become part of the property instead of simply visiting it.

And Tuesday also becomes home to the private:

CANNONBALL CANNABIS CUP.

Its landmark:

The Cannonball Hole.

Its home:

Hole 11.

Its identity built right here at Port Clovis.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday belongs to the kids.

Not one giant league where every child gets thrown together.

Three separate age groups:

AGES 3–4
AGES 5–9
AGES 10–12

Kids learning.

Kids competing.

Parents cheering.

Families returning every week.

Children growing up with something that belongs to them.

Because if Port Clovis is really supposed to become part of the future of Clovis...

THE KIDS HAVE TO BE PART OF IT.
THURSDAY

Thursday belongs to the people.

THE SANDRUMMERS CUP.

The people's league.

And standing in the Trading Post area:

THE SAND RUMMER BOAT.

Its landmark.

Its identity.

Something permanent that says:

THIS IS THEIR LEAGUE.
FRIDAY NIGHT

Around 9:00 PM...

The enormous wall becomes the screen.

The 24-hour marathon begins.

Mini golf keeps going.

Movies run.

People come and go.

Food is available.

People stay late.

Some stay into Saturday.

Port Clovis becomes a completely different experience.

And then the weekend keeps going from there.

Now add:

The Merchants Cup, where local businesses compete against each other.

The Cannonball Hole build competition.

The Cannonball Cannabis Cup.

The Sand Rummer Boat build.

The Sandrummers Cup.

Three children's leagues.

Volunteer nights.

The Community Art Legacy Mural.

Student scholarships.

Movie-marathon experiences.

Characters.

Stories.

New themed holes.

Local business partnerships.

Special events.

Community projects.

And ideas we haven't even announced yet.

And now maybe you can see what I see.

PORT CLOVIS IS NOT A MINIATURE GOLF COURSE WITH SOME EVENTS ATTACHED TO IT.
IT IS AN ENTERTAINMENT PROPERTY BEING BUILT AROUND A MINIATURE GOLF COURSE.

That is a completely different thing.

And here is something else I think Clovis needs to know.

Because some of what I am talking about may sound like something that could happen someday.

But parts of it are already happening.

PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE CLOVIS ARE ALREADY FINDING US.

We have had people come to Port Clovis from as far away as:

ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.

And:

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.

And I had a conversation with the people from Tennessee that I don't think I will ever forget.

They looked around this place and told me:

“THIS COURSE IS SO COOL, WE'RE PLANNING ON MOVING HERE AND BUYING A HOUSE BECAUSE OF WHAT YOU DID HERE.”

That was a real conversation.

Stop and think about that.

People traveled here from Tennessee.

They experienced something being built in Clovis, New Mexico.

And they left talking about MOVING HERE and buying a house.

Because what they experienced changed the way they looked at this town.

Now, am I saying Port Clovis alone is suddenly going to transform the entire economy of Clovis?

Of course not.

But that conversation proved something to me.

PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE CLOVIS CAN COME HERE, EXPERIENCE SOMETHING DIFFERENT, AND LEAVE THINKING DIFFERENTLY ABOUT CLOVIS.

That matters.

A lot.

Because every person who comes here from somewhere else may also:

Buy gas in Clovis.

Eat at a Clovis restaurant.

Get coffee here.

Shop here.

Stay in a hotel here.

Discover another local business.

Tell somebody else about this town.

And apparently...

sometimes they may even start thinking about living here.

So when I say someday I want people driving to Clovis because something is happening at Port Clovis...

That isn't completely a dream anymore.

THEY ARE ALREADY COMING.

From Pennsylvania.

From Tennessee.

Now imagine what happens as the events become bigger.

As the landmarks are built.

As the leagues become traditions.

As the mural goes up.

As the movie events begin.

As the course keeps changing.

I want people in Amarillo talking about Port Clovis.

I want people in Lubbock seeing what is happening.

I want families visiting Cannon Air Force Base bringing their relatives here.

I want somebody traveling through eastern New Mexico hearing:

“IF YOU'RE GOING THROUGH CLOVIS, YOU HAVE TO SEE PORT CLOVIS.”

Because Port Clovis becoming successful doesn't only have to help Port Clovis.

IT CAN HELP CLOVIS.

I want Port Clovis to win.

But I want:

CLOVIS TO WIN WITH IT.

And that is also why I protect what is being built here.

That is why everything cannot simply be changed because somebody doesn't understand it yet.

That is why sometimes I say no.

That is why sometimes something gets built twice.

That is why details matter.

That is why I care if something looks cheap.

That is why I care if something is crooked.

That is why I protect the characters.

That is why I care about partnerships.

That is why I care about who represents Port Clovis.

Because I am not trying to squeeze a few dollars out of this property and disappear.

I WANT PORT CLOVIS TO BE HERE LONG AFTER PEOPLE HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW HARD IT WAS TO BUILD.

I know some people think I'm crazy.

Some people think I move too quickly.

Some people think I try too many things.

Some people think Clovis will never support something this different.

Some people think we should just operate a normal miniature golf course and leave it at that.

And some people are going to criticize something before they even understand where it is headed.

That's okay.

This post isn't about fighting those people.

I am not spending my life building this place because I desperately need to prove somebody wrong.

I AM BUILDING IT BECAUSE I WANT TO PROVE WHAT CLOVIS CAN SUPPORT WHEN SOMEBODY IS WILLING TO TRY.

And then there are the other people.

The people who have believed.

The people who comment.

The people who share.

The volunteers who show up.

The businesses who take meetings.

The people who donate something.

The families who come back.

The people who stop me and say:

“KEEP GOING.”

You have no idea how much that means.

There have been very difficult days here.

There have been nights where hardly anybody showed up.

There have been times money has been extremely tight.

There have been long days building.

There have been mistakes.

There have been things we had to redo.

There have been times when doing something much easier would have made a lot more sense.

And sometimes hearing somebody say:

“DON'T STOP.”

really did matter.

But now I need to say something that may be uncomfortable.

And if we're going to have a real conversation about supporting Clovis, I think it needs to be said.

SUPPORT CANNOT STOP AT FACEBOOK.

A comment helps.

A share helps.

Encouragement helps.

But eventually support has to become action.

Because Port Clovis cannot survive on:

“I hope you make it.”

The lights still cost money.

Insurance costs money.

Repairs cost money.

Materials cost money.

Events cost money.

Building landmarks costs money.

Maintaining the property costs money.

Creating new attractions costs money.

Keeping the gates open costs money.

LOCAL BUSINESSES SURVIVE WHEN THEIR COMMUNITIES ACTUALLY USE THEM.

And there is something I want everybody to know.

PORT CLOVIS HAS GIVEN AWAY MORE THAN 1,500 FREE ROUNDS OF MINIATURE GOLF.

More than fifteen hundred.

I wanted people to experience this place.

I wanted families through the gates.

I wanted children to play.

I wanted people who may not have had extra money that week to still have a night out.

I wanted Clovis to see what we were trying to create.

And I do not regret giving those rounds away.

Not one.

Free meant free.

Nobody owes me anything.

But I do have an honest question:

WHERE ARE THOSE 1,500 PEOPLE NOW?

If you came here for free...

If your kids had fun...

If your family laughed...

If you made a memory...

If you told somebody:

“Clovis needs more places like this...”

Then I'm asking you:

COME BACK.

This time, buy the round.

Bring somebody with you.

Bring the kids back.

Bring your date.

Bring your parents.

Bring your friends.

Buy a soda.

Join a league.

Enter a competition.

Attend an event.

Spend an evening here.

Because there is a huge difference between hoping something survives...

and helping it survive.

THAT IS NOT CHARITY.

That is how communities keep the things they say they want.

Think about this.

If those 1,500 people each came back just ONE TIME...

And each brought ONE OTHER PERSON...

THAT IS 3,000 PEOPLE WALKING THROUGH THESE GATES.

Think about what that means.

More improvements.

Another attraction.

Another event.

Another league.

Another landmark.

Another sponsor seeing that Clovis supports this place.

More possibilities.

More reasons for people outside Clovis to hear about what is happening here.

And maybe another family from Pennsylvania.

Another family from Tennessee.

Another person who leaves here thinking:

“I DIDN'T KNOW CLOVIS HAD SOMETHING LIKE THIS.”

That's how perception changes.

One experience at a time.

This is why I need to push back when people say:

“CLOVIS NEEDS MORE THINGS TO DO.”

I agree.

It does.

But there is a second half to that sentence.

CLOVIS ALSO HAS TO SUPPORT THE THINGS PEOPLE BUILD FOR IT.

If you want kids to have more opportunities...

Bring them.

If you want leagues...

Join them.

If you want events...

Attend them.

If you want local businesses to invest in this community...

Support the businesses that do.

If you want Port Clovis to keep becoming something bigger...

COME USE PORT CLOVIS.

Because there is something that happens in towns all over America.

A local business struggles.

People keep meaning to go.

People assume it will always be there.

Then one day the doors close.

And suddenly everybody says:

“MAN, I WISH THAT PLACE WAS STILL HERE.”

I do not want that story for Port Clovis.

And I don't think Clovis does either.

So don't wait until something disappears to decide it mattered.

SUPPORT IT WHILE IT IS HERE.

And no...

Port Clovis is not Disneyland.

I know that.

We do not have billions of dollars.

We don't have thousands of employees.

We don't have hundreds of engineers and designers.

We are building with what we have.

Sometimes donated materials.

Sometimes volunteers.

Sometimes local businesses stepping forward.

Sometimes whatever I can afford that week.

And sometimes an idea that sounds completely impossible until we figure out how to actually do it.

But I keep coming back to the same question:

WHY CAN'T CLOVIS DREAM THAT BIG?

Not:

“Why can't we BE Disney?”

That isn't what I mean.

I mean:

WHY CAN'T WE THINK BIG?

Why can't we create landmarks?

Why can't we create traditions?

Why can't we create original characters?

Why can't kids help build something permanent in their hometown?

Why can't local businesses compete against each other for something people actually care about?

Why can't builders help physically create part of an attraction?

Why can't students help create art that funds scholarships?

Why can't Friday night turn into an enormous all-night experience?

Why can't people travel here for something?

Why can't Port Clovis eventually become something people identify with Clovis?

Why can't somebody someday hear that you're visiting Clovis and immediately say:

“YOU HAVE TO GO TO PORT CLOVIS.”

I believe that can happen.

In some small ways...

IT ALREADY IS.

But there is one part I cannot do myself.

I can dream.

I can build.

I can organize.

I can make calls.

I can find partners.

I can create leagues.

I can develop competitions.

I can create characters.

I can work long days.

I can continue improving the property.

I can take risks.

And I can keep opening the gates.

But I cannot manufacture:

A COMMUNITY THAT SHOWS UP.

That part belongs to Clovis.

Port Clovis can build the stage.

We can build the landmarks.

We can create the leagues.

We can organize the competitions.

We can work toward scholarships.

We can create the community projects.

We can turn a wall more than 150 feet long into a massive movie screen.

We can turn on the lights.

WE CAN OPEN THE GATE.

But eventually:

CLOVIS HAS TO WALK THROUGH IT.

That is the partnership.

Port Clovis supports Clovis.

Clovis supports Port Clovis.

That's how this survives.

That's how it grows.

That's how another attraction gets built.

And maybe someday we finally stop hearing:

“THERE'S NOTHING TO DO IN CLOVIS.”

Because when somebody finally tried building something different...
